Last week I had my oath ceremony, and I can finally turn my status red! It feels very odd to think that I'm a US Citizen, and that I don't need to deal with visas, greencards or USCIS in any meaningful way again.

I had my oath ceremony last week at the Federal Building in St Paul, with about 45 other new citizens.

We were told to arrive at 8.35 am, which we did, and the ceremony started at 9.15 am. Prior to the ceremony, the League of Women Voters handed out voter registration forms and helped people fill them in.

For the ceremony, we started with the national anthem, USCIS formally advised the judge that we could be citizens. We then took the oath. The judge made some remarks, we took the pledge and they showed a short video to "America the Beautiful". They handed out the certificates, and we were able to line up & get a photo with the judge.

Note - we didn't realize when taking the oath that this was the very moment we became citizens, so if you have family/friends videoing the ceremony, make sure they get all of this. My husband stopped because all you could see was my back.

All over, it was about 13.5 months from submission to oath.

My oath has been scheduled, just waiting to see the letter (and date) on my account. Assuming it will probably be June 5 or June 12. It will be nice for all this paperwork to be over!

I received notification today that I was approved, and that i was in line for the oath ceremony - so now the "my.uscis.gov" says approved and they are scheduling my oath ceremony, and my "egov.uscis.gov" account says my case was submitted for quality review.

This is good enough for me! I consider this approved and will await the oath ceremony.

I hope everybody else gets interviews as pleasant as mine.

I offered them, but she didn't even look at them, let alone take them. She didn't look at anything in the folder I brought along.

I had the tax transcripts of my returns downloaded from the IRS site. When I applied in '18, I supplied them for tax years 2016 and prior (as I hadn't submitted 2017).

I downloaded 2017 & 2018 for the interview to demonstrate that we didn't owe the government any money (we have been due refunds every year). I have the PDF if they need it.

Yes, I'm in line for the oath - the online account is also where I saw the "quality review" notice as well as being in line for the oath. Just hoping the quality review doesn't decide they want my tax transcripts, given I would have been happy to hand them over today. It's easy enough to upload, I'm just ready for this whole thing to be done.

Another note - my case status online says that I was recommended for approval and I'm in line for an oath ceremony - but also my file is going to have a "quality review" - so probably a new agent and they are randomly double checking some of the work.

Had my interview today.

Arrived about 25 mins early - went through security quickly and checked in. The guy at check-in was a bit confused as his computer said I was already a citizen, which made me a little less nervous. I'm thinking they might pre-approve, pending the interview.

I was only seated for about 30 seconds when they called me. There was quite a bit of noise in the room at the time, and I couldn't understand the number, but when I asked those around me, they couldn't hear it properly either, but they yelled it from the door.

USCIS interviewer was nice. She asked me to verify my details, asked a few questions from the application (name of my husband, whether we have kids, do I belong to a terrorist organization), and asked about any international travel since my application. I hadn't submitted my 2017 tax return when I applied in 2018, so I had transcripts from both 2018 and 2017, but she wasn't interested. I had actually worked many nights to get my small business paperwork completed so we could get our taxes in for the interview. We had received the interview letter whilst traveling, so we had less time than usual to prepare.

I had to do a reading test (What was the first state?) and a writing test (Delaware was the first state), and the civics questions:

What is the economic system of the United States (capitalism)

Who is the Vice President? (I nearly said Joe Biden!)

Name one war the US participated in during the 1900's (World War 2)

Name one branch of government (executive)

Who is in charge of the executive (the president)

Name one thing the federal government can do (print money)

She then said she was recommending me for approval and my oath would be in about a month.

I tried to update the spreadsheet but the link I had says the file is in the trash, so FWIW, I first applied 4/29/18, so my interview was a year to the very day of my application.

Great news, I have my interview set for April 29, about a year after I filed.

My husband has been testing me on civics questions, so I am feeling hopeful that this will all be over shortly.

Both xe.com and ofx.com do transfers, as well as transferwise, otherwise he can go to his local bank and wire the money, though they'll probably charge a fee. He'll need all the information on the recipient's account (which you can send him).

If it's only a small amount (say $50), then he can easily buy USD as cash at the local bank and pop it in a birthday card.

Exactly, there are nuances & rules above and beyond the basics - plus stuff people say here may not be entirely correct (like my comment - didn't take into account any adoption laws, just the face that you can only sponsor children, parents and spouses). Take what people are saying here as a starting point, read up on the USCIS.gov site, and then consult and immigration lawyer if things are still unclear.

Ah, silly me. I thought this thread was being really quiet, but it turned out I just wasn't getting notifications. SMH.

Congrats to everybody who has been able to move through the process. The MInneapolis-St Paul field office is slow, but if it keeps up the current rate, I just *may* be hearing from them in April next year. There might only be a few of us left!

Is anybody changing their name with their N-400? I'm thinking about it....

It would depend on how you wanted them to come over. You are unable to sponsor them for a greencard, as they need to be your spouse, parent or child.. You would need to legally adopt them if they were to be sponsored on a greencard and to attend public school.

If the family has plenty of money, then there are private schools that take international students, and networks. For example, https://www.cambridgenetwork.com helps find homestays in the school area, and they have schools all over the country. I found one just as an example - Bishop Fenwick HIgh School in Boston, grades 9 - 12, $50,000 per year plus incidentals. Nice & close to Harvard to inspire the students! I would assume that schools accustomed to international students would have general visa knowledge as to what they would need.

So essentially your options are (a) Adopt the kid, then sponsor a green card, or (b) Pay lots of money for private school.

Otherwise you may need to talk to an immigration lawyer. If you're not wanting to spend a few hundred bucks on that, then we can rule out Option B.

Yes, it's blown out even further! When I applied it was 17-22 months. On Aug 3, it was 15 - 19.5 months. Now it's expanded by 6 months.

Not only that, but the Receipt Date for a case enquiry was Jan 2017 back on Aug 9, and has slipped back to July 2016 now.

I'm just hoping it's technical difficulties. The only thing that hasn't changed is the estmated date for my case completion, which is Feb 2020. *sigh*

Thank you! I'm regretting not applying at the 3 year mark, instead of waiting for 5 years like I did. I could perhaps just be getting citizenship now if I applied 2 years ago! Thank goodness this is the last of it.
