It's been awhile (years) since I last posted.  I came in on a K1 visa in December 2012 and now I am a US citizen with 3 dual citizen kids!  My hubby has been having a lot of work issues. We live near Seattle, WA tech hub but most jobs are contract jobs so they are constantly starting and ending and it's stressful with a family of 5.  We just heard through my family in Canada about a good job opportunity that is NOT a contract just over the border in BC (near Sumas WA).  My husband is the only one of our family NOT a dual citizen, haha, so he would need a work visa to go to Canada which the company might provide as they do that more often.  So here's my question: Which is a better idea - living in Canada with the Canadian health insurance kicking in after 3 months residency, and paying out the nose (800k minimum for a 3 bedroom house) for a house, OR, living in Sumas, crossing the border daily (like, literally only 5-10 minutes more), NOT having Canadian health insurance due to not being a resident, but having a much cheaper house (literally 300k for a 3 bedroom!).  I know that's before the exchange rate comes into pay, but come on, that's a big price difference.  The kids and I could live in either country, and theoretically so could my hubby with his visa, but my main issue is the health insurance and housing costs. Any thoughts???

Oh and I should add, we all have Nexus and that border crossing does as well, so that is not really a factor.

Got my passport card in the mail today- sort of. I hadn't checked for a while. It could have arrived as early as Thursday. Ah well, putting today in as the date.

Also, wow, guess I'm out of stuff to track on VisaJourney now... Crazy.

Thanks for the replies! It'll be nice to know I only need those two pieces of paperwork. I'm getting a passport card too, just because I can. And extra proof of citizenship to make me feel better. I mentioned to my husband that we could get rid of all the papers now and his first reply was, "But, shouldn't we keep it for sentimental reasons? We can show our kids how much we had to go through for them to exist and be dual citizens!" Great, well now I'm rethinking shredding it all haha

Does anyone have any ideas or recommendations on what paperwork we should keep after becoming a citizen? I have so many papers from K1 through to N400 and it's ridiculous. Do we really only need our citizenship certificate or US passport for proof of citizenship? Am I required to keep any of the forms and whatnot? I'd rather not hold onto this stuff the rest of my life! Thanks for any information!

Am I the only one whose naturalization certificate got STAPLED to the application? Grr...it was only 5 days old! Staple hole for eternity. Boo.

For those going through Seattle, at the end of my interview the officer asked if I could stay for the oath ceremony in the afternoon. I said yes but I imagine if I had said no he would have just scheduled me for a later one. The ceremony was at 1:15. Hope that's some help. I wish they'd tell you that ahead of time

Guys! I also managed to find all dressed chips at my local grocery store (stop&shop)! I was with my SIL and she was so taken aback at my level of excitement haha. You're right, they don't quite have that zing to them but I will most certainly take what I can get!

My guess is they tamed down the 'zing' for fear of Americans disliking the slight vinegar taste... and I bet that's going to bite them in the end when they're too bland for either nationality to like them. I don't think I'm going to buy them again, to be honest. I want the real deal or I'll go find something else with zing to it.

So for those in the Washington state area, Fred Meyer / Kroger is now selling a few things - Skor bars. Tim's Cascade potato chips now have a new dill pickle flavour! (pretty good too!) And they have Ruffles all dressed!!!! Sort of. It's the American version advertised as the #1 flavour in Canada and there's a silly explanation of all dressed being not just wearing your clothes, or something. It's okay, but not quite the same 'bite' as the Canadian version. My guess is they tamed down the vinegar. But, it's something!

Got my interview letter today - Interview on May 11. Time to get studying!!!

Guys, I need your input. We're all super familiar with the Canadian snacks that we can't find here but I need some suggestions on US flavours/snacks that we don't have in Canada slash aren't readily available to bring over when I visit home. I know there are a ton and this is for a friend who's a bit of a junk food connoisseur (if you can even call it that haha). I've already got red velvet oreo's, mallomars and entenmann's black and whites on my list but am kind of drawing a blank for anything other than cookies as I've tried to (mostly) steer clear of the junk food aisles since coming here.

You could try looking for regional favourites - in Washington I like to get Tim's Cascade potato chips, Aplets and Cotlets and local drinks (from all the orchards). I'm sure there's more but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

That is beyond cute and I am super jealous of the coffee crisp and crispers! Aren't skor bars just called heath bars here though?

I've tried Heath bars and they're ok but they're just not the same! Kind of meh!

My latest Canadian stash - All Dressed Crispers, Coffee Crisp, Red Rose Orange Pekoe, Bits & Bites Cheese, Hickory Sticks... unfortunately I forgot ketchup chips and Skor bars. Next time!!! Don't mind the diapers.... they were a necessary purchase haha. Gotta get the things that keep you sane! Oh and my dual citizen baby apparently wants to eat the hickory sticks already...

Adding my biometrics date.

My hubby doesn't really get my love of Tim Horton's or really even get that restaurant concept (he boggles at an eat-in donut sandwich combination shop), but he indulges me. My most missed item is definitely the iced capp but we found some powder through Amazon that allows us to make almost the same flavour drink! So delicious!

If I were you, I wouldn't worry for early walk-in. It would just advance your application for 5-10 days. They usually do not turn away walk-in applicants. However, there is always a risk. Also, some offices make walk-in applicants wait until all scheduled applicants are done with fingerprints. This wasn't the case for my office last week though.

I guess you're probably right. It's just not guaranteed. Well, hopefully the assigned day works out then. Thanks for the feedback!!

You are correct. I applied almost the first day I was eligible to apply but I'm pretty sure I won't be approved before April. USCIS move THAT fast? Who are we kidding

What was it like for walk-in? Could you give me a quick rundown? Did they not have an issue with you not coming on your assigned date? I remember for my ROC biometrics they verified I had the appointment that day. Are there certain days they aren't available or are Monday through Friday all equally available for walk-in? I just want to be positive I won't be turned away because it's over an hour drive there, and I have to get a babysitter for my 2 year old and/or drag my nursing 6 month old along there and back as well.

Maria2012 and BGD, you are both in the Seattle area - did you both do walk-in fingerprints? I have read reviews in the past that they didn't let that or they were too busy?

Another update - got my new daughter's Nexus interview done and received her card in time to cross the border for Christmas with my family. I got it without her having any ID other than her birth certificate. We have since added her passport. I tried to update my older daughter with her new Canadian citizenship in the file but the officer at the Seattle Nexus office told me that they don't acknowledge dual citizenship so they didn't add it to her file. I get it, but now I'm confused about myself - when I become American eventually, do I have to change my citizenship on Nexus (become American instead of Canadian) since Americans are always supposed to enter the country on their American ID? I guess I'll find out when the time comes and probably call a Nexus information line. Not sure how often they deal with that.
