  1. As the majority name one single major piece of legislation that they've passed or even proposed...well except for the repeal of the ACA 50 times.

Just name ONE major accomplishment since 2010?

And shutting down the government doesn't count as an accomplishment because they've literally abstain from action to achieve that.

Here's how it all works if you're interested:

Generally the Speaker of the House does not introduce bills. Other members of congress usually do that. In the last month or so these bills have been introduced by members form both parties:

I guess it's kinda hard to introduce legislation when you're spending all of your time raising the limit on the national credit card.

  3. It is not turning a profit. It is supporting the growth of the national economy. From such growth, an increased revenue stream results. That stream will be reduced if you put the process in reverse. With a reduced revenue stream, deficits grow. Look at the nations in Europe that have gone that route. All have an economy now that is smaller than it was when the great recession first hit. All have more severe fiscal issues than they had before. All have larger debts now than they had before. And they lack the economic engine to pull themselves out of that mess. They took the gas out of the tank and wonder why the damn thing won't crank up. Well, gotta put gas in first then you can get some mileage. It's really not that hard to understand.

WE DONT HAVE ANY MORE MONEY. WE"RE BROKE. THE FEDERAL GOVT HAS A DEBT THAT EQUALS 6+ YEARS OF REVENUE. THE GOVT. TOOK IN 2.45 TRILLION IN FY2012. THE DEBT IS 16 TRILLION PLUS

That means that theoretically if the government didn't spend one cent for 6 years, and still collected the taxes etc. that they do now, that it would take 6+ years to break even. The fact that you think it's a good idea to spend even more money has me wondering about you.

ETA: It shocks me that folks like you look at those numbers and worry about some touriust attracttions.

I see. We should have never built any national infrastructure.

I can tell you're losing an argument when you start going to the google image well to make your point. Where did I say anything about infrastructure? Since you brought it up, most of that infrastructure was built when we didn't have a debt that was reaching 100% of GDP. Think about that. The debt is 100% of our entire economic output for one year. And you want to worry about some stupid tourist attractions? Go find and image for that silliness and make it your wallpaper.

  5. My argument is that we're getting a pretty good bang out of the buck from these things. The height of stupidity is to willfully slow down the very economy that we need to run stronger in order to have any chance to tackle the deficit.

Again the govt. has no business getting a bang out of any buck. They're not there to turn a profit. You can't keep spending money you don't have simply to keep the economy going. The government has no business doing that espeically when they have a 16 trillion dollar debt. LIke I said, if we had all this extra money laying around, it might be something to look at. We don't have any money.

  6. No. But tourism accounts for a good bit of our economy. In some places, it accounts for most of the economy. Kill it and the deficit will get worse not better. When airlines, hotels, restaurants and other businesses in the travel and leisure industry flourish, more people are employed, more people pay taxes, fewer people rely on public benefits and local, state and the federal government have more revenue coming in keeping things going. You wanna cut those revenue streams in order to make the deficit smaller. That's like proposing to quit a job so you can pay off a loan faster. Makes no sense whatsoever.

Well that's what happens when you spend more than you collect. As far as I can tell, those tourist places aren't going anywhere. They can sell the private interests and let them run them. we could have the Washington monument sponsored by Pepsi. Or the Smithsonian sponsored by Google. I know that sucks, but that's what you get when run up a debt like that.

This notion you have that we should keep these things we can't afford because it might hurt the economy, is the height of stupidity.

You keep acting like the government is supposed to perform as some kind of business. That's what got us into this mess. ####### are they doing running tourist attractions when they have a 16 trillion dollar debt anyway?

  7. I just priced a ticket to PI this week. The ticket round trip was $400 in airfare and $435 in fees/taxes to make it $835 total.

Where the hell do all those fees go?

    It's crazy...

laughing.gif Since the ticket was double, they should give you your own personal security guard for the flight. $835 is pretty good though. I've been pricing tickets to Thailand, and they've all been ~$1300

  8. All the people who think this is no big deal are obviously not personally affected. We were alerted by homeland security that some essential services may not be available during the shutdown. What a great time to take advantage of the lax in security. But then again, that's obviously Obama's fault. wink.png

Maybe if they used the security fees they charge on every single airline ticket for actual homeland security, and not dump it into the general fund, there wouldn't be an issue.

  9. Yes, kill tourism and the hospitality industry to bring the fiscal house in order. Good Lord.

So they should spend money they don't have to support privately run hotels? Since when is it the govt's responsibility to make sure hotel rooms are full? Hey I might support something like that if we were flush with all this extra cash, but we're not.

I had a family member call me recently asking to borrow money to make the payment on their BMW. I suggested they sell the car since it's almost paid off and maybe use the money to buy something more reasonable. That way they would have no car payment and some cash left over. They were having none of that. This thread reminds of that conversation for some reason.
