K1 visa holder arrived - SSN question

My fianc just arrived in the U.S. on a K1 visa. We plan on getting married in the next couple of weeks and proceeding with our Adjustment of Status.

I have a question regarding obtaining a SSN for my fiance. I've read that the typical recommendation after arriving in the U.S. is to:

  1. Wait 2 weeks and apply for a SSN
  2. Get Married
  3. If the K1 visa holder is changing names, apply for a new SSN to reflect this
  4. Begin filing Adjustment of Status documents

My fianc has an existing SSN from about a decade ago when she was in the U.S. on some sort of student/work exchange program. She lived and worked in the state of MA for about 6 weeks; her current SSN card says "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION". Do I still need to do step 1 in this case since she already has her SSN, or does the submittal of the SS5 form adjust her status in the U.S. in any way? I was going to register her on the mySSN website and check for validity/earnings history, but assuming everything looks good and we are still in possession of her original card, can we skip this step?

Hi everyone! I posted some questions about my daughter 's case which is moving but slowly. We petitioned for her in 2013. Finally, we are now almost at the last stage of getting her visa fun. It is F11 visa.

The question:

In November 2020 we got email from NVC saying all documents are accepted.NVC will work with the consulate to schedule her interview and etc.

WHAT exactly we need to do now? How it works? Will we get a notice with the instructions? Will they notify us about interview date? Who has the same experience?

Thank you!

Dropped the ball - Evidence of Support

Hello all,

I'm petitioning my fiance for a K-1 visa and she has her interview scheduled this Thursday. When going through our final checklist last week, she realized that we must have misplaced our original copy of my signed I-134 form I had completed as part of our Evidence of Support. I immediately filled out a new copy on Friday and sent it via DHL to my fiance to arrive at the earlist possible opportunity, which is unfrotunately the day AFTER her interview. So not I'm wondering if it would be best for her to attend the interview THursday as scheduled, or try and reschedule to a later time.

If she proceeds with the interview Thursday, this is what she will have available as evidence:

  • Copy of I-134 form with digital signature only
  • Copy of my U.S. Passport to indicate U.S. status
  • Copy of final 2020 paystub with Year-end totals
  • Copy of first 2021 paystub
  • Copy of 2019 W2 (2020 is not available yet)
  • Copy of 2019 Federal Tax Return
  • December 2020 Checking Account Statement
  • December 2020 Savings Account Statement
  • December 2020 Health Savings Account Statement
  • December 2020 Roth IRA Statement
  • December 2020 401k Statement
  • December 2020 non-retirement Brokerage Statements
  • Screenshot of U.S. Treasury website showing holdings of U.S. series I and series EE bonds (no statements are available on the TreasuryDirect webpage)

In addition to whether it would be better to proceed Thursday or postpone.........are there any other documents that may be suggested? I saw some individuals have included letters from their emplyoer which we did not do, however I could contact my comapny's HR department on Monday to get something quick if necessary.

Thanks in advance everyone.

K1 visa - can we marry in CNMI?

Hello all,

I'm currently in the process of petitioning my fianc for a K-1 visa. She has her interview scheduled in mid-January and assuming all goes well we are hoping she is approved and is able to join me in the U.S. shortly afterwards.

Meanwhile, my company has asked me to take a long-term assignment in the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), which is a U.S. territory near Guam. I normally live in California; the original plan for my fianc and me was to have her come to California (from her home in Europe) where we would wed and eventually apply for permanent resident status and apply for a social security number. Now it looks like I will be in CNMI before my fianc completes her interview and despite CNMI being a U.S. territory, I'm not sure if we are allowed to get married there under the terms of her anticipated K-1 visa. We have 3 options to get her from Europe to either the U.S./CNMI and get married which I've listed below:

  1. She travels from Europe to California and stays in California for a few days. Eventually travels to CNMI through Hawaii and Guam. We get married in CNMI.
  2. She travels from Europe to CNMI with layovers in Singapore and Seoul. We get married in CNMI
  3. She travels from Europe to California and I travel from CNMI to California where we meet. We get married in CA and then travel to CNMI together through Hawaii and Guam.

I would greatly prefer option #1 as this would allow her to move her things into my place in CA and then join me in CNMI without interrupting my work schedule. If we can't do options 1 or 2, then I'd guess we'd have to go with option #3; have me return to California where we can get married there and apply for an SSN before we return to CNMI for the next couple years.

I'd like to get feedback specifically on whether on not we can do option #1 or #2 while meeting our specific goals of fulfilling the marriage requirement (for the K-1 visa) and having her apply permanent resident status and a SSN. I have checked and did see there is a SS office in CNMI so I think it's more a question on whether we are allowed to get married there or not and whether she can travel there directly or is required to go through the continental U.S.

Thank you in advance.
