NVC can tell you the date they finished work on your petition and authorized it to be sent the Consulate. The can give you absolutely no more information than that, not even what day it actually left NVC via DHL because they don't know. Yes, I mean they may tell you it left a certain day but they really only know a database flag was changed on that day authorizing the mail room to send it.

If you want further information, you call the DOS (Dept. of State) visa information line at 202.663.1225 then menu selections 1-0-0 and ask them for a current status. They also will not know when the Consulate physically received your case because they don't have shipment tracking information. What they do have is case status information. If your case shows as "loaded" that means the electronic file is at the Consulate. When the status changes to "open" that means the IV unit at the Consulate has opened the box with your case in it, opened the envelope and logged it into their system as received. Typically, the P3 is authorized to be sent that same day or the next, provided all is well. That does not mean the P3 was actually mailed. It's just a database flag again. It may be a week or so before the packet is prepared and mailed.

You can continue to call DOS as the case progresses through to an interview date being assigned. I suggest you make a log of your calls. Here's mine as an example.

Date Time Name Status

4/21/2006 7:45 Raquel Confirm transfer on 18th but electronic file not yet boarded

4/25/2006 6:19 ? Says case is Loaded but not received. Claims loaded date is same as transfer date

5/12/2006 8:02 Jeanette Reconfirmed loaded date. No further update. Seemed distracted. Didn't ask if I was petitioner.

5/22/2006 1:33 BJ Confirms P3 sent May 17 There is no second name check scheduled at this time.

5/26/2006 6:03 Sue P3 NOT logged as received- Case shows as "open" which is supposed to mean the physical file is present.

5/31/2006 9:01 Raquel P3 NOT logged as received- Raquel also confirms the physical file is present since May 17.

6/2/2006 11:05 ? P3 NOT logged as received

6/5/2006 10:10 Rose P3 Not Logged as received

6/7/2006 9:35 Michael P3 Not Logged as received

6/9/2006 9:20 BJ P3 Not Logged as received

6/12/2006 8:05 v spec :-) No new update This seemed to be a new person. Wouldn't give name when asked.

6/14/2006 7:35 Jennifer Document qualified, eligible for interview P3 logged 6/14/06 Interview not scheduled.

6/15/2006 6:47 Barbara No Change

6/16/2006 6:46 Raquel No Change

6/19/2006 6:18 BJ I'm sorry but no interview has been scheduled yet.

6/20/2006 7:09 BJ I'm sorry but no interview has been scheduled yet.

6/23/2006 6:54 BJ No interview yet

If you have the date it was mailed from NVC, you can call DHL and tell them the date, sender Zip code (03801) and Mumbai consulate's zip code and also say the packet is from Department of State. DHL will let you know when it was recieved in Mumbai. Probably, their might be a few cases that left on the same date, but yours will be definetly one of them. This is how I found out.

You can do this or use use DHL track by reference but you'll never know for certain which day your package actually left NVC or which of potentiall multiple packages went to your Consulate that day.

For example, my wife received her P3 three weeks before any of the several packages I was tracking, cleared Customs and was delivered. Go figure.

Typically, the P3 is authorized to be sent that same day or the next, provided all is well. That does not mean the P3 was actually mailed. It's just a database flag again. It may be a week or so before the packet is prepared and mailed.

Thats pretty good since it saves about 2-3 weeks of receiving the packet 3 and sending it back to them. I am guessing you downloaded the packet 3 from Mumbai Consulate website....let me know if i am wrong. I hope to get my approval soon and i just want to start preparing the packet 3 so i don't waste any time....Congratulations on your approval....

i called DOS a few mins ago the lady was extremely helpful. She told me that mumbai consulate has already sent out the packet 3. I asked her what if we do not receive the packet 3. She answered that i could obtain the packet from their web site. to which i asked so can i go ahead and send in my ds-156, ds 230, etc (as listed in step one of the packet 3 instruction) she said yes you can. just make sure you do not send in other documents refering to tax papers, pay stubs, etc.

woohooo

then called my wife she said she has not received the packet 3. so we are going to go ahead and send in papers stated in step one of the instruction package.
