A related comment - I was in our local supermarket the other day - and the item of the month was red bell peppers for $1.49lb. The whole box was rotten. The Item of the Month sign was new and immaculate.

Says it all really.

Find a better supermarket. There are plenty...

Believe it or not - this is the better one. Actually its not bad - though certain things tend to be of a muchness. Where-ever we go I have a difficult time finding decent bell peppers that aren't bruised, cracked or partially mouldy. I just laughed that they put an item of the month sign over a box of vegetables that people have been pawing through for a few days.

The ones we used to shop at were far worse, including one where an employee stacking up cabbages on a display table kicked one across the floor to a co-worker, then picked it up and put it back.

BTW - we were up near Jose Tejas the other day, and there's a jug handle turn-off there to do the u-turn to get back onto the 1 and 9. There's a cell phone store up there which seems to deal in things other than cell phones.

There's one sign over the window with a yellow Nextel logo and beneath it, in the exact same shade of yellow a second sign below it that says "Naughty Gifts"; and another for Cingular with a separate orange sign for "potions and lotions". I kid you not - it's the strangest thing...

Idiots! All I can say.

NY and NJ are not very car friendly, period. Not like CA is.

Yeah - no kidding. The road network in NJ is very similar to the UK (i.e. inadequate for the volume of traffic that goes through it) - there also seems to be a comparable amount of road-rage.

LOL I know exactly which store you're talking about :D The wife and I were up there yesterday (the great indoors) and I noticed that.

Which is why there is so much money flowing into NJ Transit's budget right now. NJ is practically fully built out but there is plenty of abandoned rail right-of-ways.

So - who thinks if this very article were about a boring, non-descript state like West Virginia, that the discussion would have stayed focussed on government waste and not on "NJ sucks"?

Apparently NJ sucks more than government waste. By that rationale though - NJ Government waste would be the worst thing of all... Logically speaking of course ;)

So what is it about Jersey that evokes such strong reactions from people who have never lived here, and in many cases, have never been here? I see this on other message boards as well. Texas is probably the only other state that I've read so much negativity about, mostly from people who've never been and never lived.

Beats me. I do think though that judgments about the State stem are really judgements relating to specific NJ cities, like Newark. Of course if you take a drive down to places like Westfield and Cranford, or further afield to say Princeton, the contrast couldn't be more different.

I actually used to experience much the same thing in the UK, coming from Essex. The whole county seems to be defined by the chav towns in Basildon and Southend.

Check out the towns in northern Somerset county. It's beautiful out there. Short drive from where I am, too, but financially worlds away.

For Number6, VJTroll:

I actually lived about 1 year in NJ (1976-1977, in Princeton, when my dad had a sabbatical from UofC). For me, the critical factor is the lack of reasonable (maximum of one aircraft-swap, NEVER at YYZ/Pigtown) air-connexions to Calgary.

So, I think I'm entitled to say "Joisey Sucks"!

Fair do's - Not that there's any real comparison here, but by that rationale I could say that Rome sucks because their subway trains aren't air-conditioned and a rush-hour train in summer is armpit city.

Double park. Everyone else in NJ/NY does.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt
