When filling out the I485 it asks for a SSN. I don't have one yet. I thought I was supposed to file for AOS first and then SSN. I'm confused can someone help? I also didn't get my drivers license yet. Do you need a SSN for that? Thanks for your help.

AOS Timeline

01-02-2008 - AOS Sent

01-04-2008 - Received Date

01-08-2008 - Notice Date I-797C

01-16-2008 - Received NOA for Biometrics appointment

01-30-2008 - Biometrics appointment

02-15-2008 - Received NOA Request for applicant to appear for initial interview Form I-485, Notice Date - Feb.8,2008

03-04-2008 - Received EAD for both myself and my son.........:)

03-04-2008 - Received AP for both myself and my son.......:)

05-07-2008 - Interview for I-485

05-07-2008 - Request for additional medical for myself. I was pregnant for the first medical and couldn't get xrays for the TB test. I also needed mumps measles and rubella shot at the time and couldn't get until after the pregnancy.

05-23-2008 - Medical approved and sent to USCIS.

06-03-2008 - I-797 Notice of Action . Welcome notice. Application for permanent residence approved...:)!!

06-06-2008 - Greencards received....YEAH!! Happy Dance!!

Don't worry about not having an SSN for your AOS - a lot of people usually apply for it afterwards to save the hassle of changing it over to the married name. I'm personally waiting for my SSN verification, but that isn't going to stop me from filing AOS! :lol:

Depending on what state you live in, you might require an SSN before you can get a DL. Check your state DMV requirements.

Thank you. I think I'd like to apply for the SSN, only because I don't want to leave anything blank on the I485 form. The problem is I have a 15 year old son and to apply for a SSN for him it requires that I first apply for an EAD which when I apply for AOS it is included. I'm so confused.......lol. Is there anyone I can call at USCIS for help?

An SSN is NOT required for AOS in any way, shape or form (actually I don't believe an SSN is required for any immigration form). Don't worry about leaving the field blank on the I-485, but you should write NONE rather than leave it blank, to avoid any confusion.

Timeline:

2005-04-14: met online

2005-09-03: met in person

2007-02-26: filed for K-1

2007-03-19: K-1 approved

2007-06-11: K-1 in hand

2007-07-03: arrived in USA

2007-07-21: got married, yay!

2007-07-28: applied for green card

2008-02-19: conditional green card in hand

2010-01-05: applied for removal of conditions

2010-06-14: 10-year green card in hand

2013-11-19: applied for US citizenship

2014-02-10: became a US citizen

2014-02-22: applied for US passport

2014-03-14: received US passport
