My husband immigrated here from Canada almost a year ago, under a K1 Visa, we are now awaiting status of adjustment. We just made our minds up that we want to move to Canada approx 2-3 years from now. Does he apply for Dual Citizenship and WHAT do I apply for?

Has anyone else done anything similar to this?Esp US/Canada folks.

Is it a difficult procedure..?

In order for him to apply for US citizenship, he will need to live here for at least 3 years after he gets his green card PLUS the time that it takes to go through the naturalization process. The naturalization process might take a couple of yeatrs. So, he may have to be here for around 5 years in order to get citizenship.

If you move to Canada without your husband getting citizenship first and later decide to move back to the US, you will have to go through the immigration process again.

So.. he can move back to Canada w/ no hitch in 3 years?...and what exactly do I apply for if that is the route we take... Now, if he does wait until he is a citizen HERE... does he apply for dual and THEN... what do I apply for?

Yes he will have to wait untill 3 years after his AOS interview.My wife is Canadian(also came in on k1) and we had to wait almost 3 years just for the AOS interview.She has been in the USA for 5 1/2 years and now she can file for her citzenship.I do know some staes (we are in Calif,she is from Ontario)are faster with the AOS stuff.We have been looking into her getting her citzenshisp stuff done and looks like it can take between 180-800 plus days before the interview.Then you have to take the Oath and that could be anywhere from the same day to 6 plus months down the road.So from start to finsh we are looking at 5 plus years b4 she can become a citzen.All cases are different, im just giving you our timeline since you were wondering about Canadians.But once he does become a US citzen then he can travel and work,to and from with no problems.You on the other hand would have to look into Canadian(look here http://www.cic.gc.ca/) immagration.On the other hand you would not be allowed to have dual citzenship since your the American citzen.American Born are not allowed to carry both.Unless you have kids etc.My American born daughter carries both and my Canadian born step daughter will beable to carry both in the near future.If I were you guys I would not move back to Canada untill he is a US citzen.Like the other poster said he would have to apply again if you wanted to move back.Once he IS a LPR he can only live outside the USA for either 6 months or a year?I cant remember.If over those times he will loose his green card.

He can work in either the US or Canada

Totally false. Both American and Canadian citizens are free to have dual citizenship from any other country without restriction.

What I read is that the US makes you verbally renounce your citizenship to other countries, but unless your home country abides by that it means nothing. So technically you can have both Canadian and American citizenship.... the US won't recognize it but Canada will.
