I'm sure any psychologist could tell you that most abusers were themselves victims of abuse of some kind or other.

But still - once you commit a crime like this, is there really any coming back from that? That's a whole other level of psychosis.

No there obviously is no "coming back from that" as you put it however, I still do not believe that the death penalty is the answer, just sweep it under the carpet so to speak? Doesn't help anyone, does it?

I don't agree with the DP either - but I do have to wonder what would otherwise become of this guy. You can't be rehabilitated after something like this - so the best that could otherwise be hoped for is life in a secure facility (raping a child and burying them alive is an insane thing to do).

No-one ever touches the underlying issue of how people get turned out this way - because simple solutions (like the DP) are easier than looking at diffuse causes and effects. The DP is as much about making an example as it is an act of simple vengeance, but whether it deters anyone from crime is arguable.

Well, I like you already!! I do understand that rehabilitation would be futile, some seeds are too far set, so then a secure facility is all that is left then...maybe not ideal but still.

To add more to your comment I believe it's totally arguable that the DP is not a deterrant, proof's everywhere you look!!

I must preface this with the fact that what happened to Jessica Lunsford is absolutely terrible however I am not sure the death penalty is the answer...for those of you that see past your red mist when first reading this...go on to read this please>>>>

The red mist? Maybe you read this part differently. I read this as he says he wants help when the alternative is jail but skips that which was offered to him after he did his time. Remember, this is the same guy that wanted to convince the jury that he's insane by painting in coloring books during the opening days of his trial. Anything to keep him out of the facilities, really. Quite calculating if you ask me.

Facing significant jail time, Couey again asked for help. "Personally, I feel prison ain't gonna help me," he told police."I don't want to go to prison, I want help for myself."

In a few years he was out of prison. At one point parole officials lost his criminal history file. Couey also skipped sex offender treatment sessions and eventually he disappeared from authorities' radar.

All that said, a man who not only rapes but then buries a child alive should simply not be breathing.

I believe that all environmental psychosis is anchored on the relationship between a child and its primary caretaker(s), particularly mothers. I would bet that in every FBI profile of such deviants, the perpetrator had a turbulent childhood.

There are kids out there right now that are being turned into tomorrow's killers/monsters...what are we doing to stop it?

He has become a disgusting and vile monster, but was he one as a child himself? It's too late for him but we'd be blindsided by our emotions if we don't look into the causes to prevent kids today from growing up to be the next psycho.

Whether how I feel is right or not, God can judge me, but I am very glad he got the death penalty. Nothing gives someone the excuse to do what he did. And this wasn't his first offense relating to children. It just makes me ill.

Gary, if that were true, then we should find out which children are evil spawn and exterminate them. A child is not born evil and people aren't born to hate. I suppose there are people who have an extra chromosome that makes them criminally insane, but most adults who do evil things were 'created' by adults when they were children. Those adults are out there right now - beating the sh#t out of their kids and other abuse. We can do better to stop them before those kids grow up to do evil things themselves.
