I think it is, actually. I believe there is also a FDA regulation against unpasteurized cheese, which would explain why it's difficult to get hold of some of the best soft cheeses.

that might be a regional thing - they love that sort of thing down south. My mother, for example, who delighted in the fact she never had to share the gizzards.

Yup, just found this:

Note to U.S. residents: The United States government has determined that sheep lungs are unfit for human consumption. It is therefore illegal to import most haggisses into the U.S.

I've been buying haggis from a Brit shop in Mass the past few years and she hasn't been stopped importing it....yet. It's bleedin lovely too. She does a lovely line of chipolatas from her old butcher back in Scotland. They are the best I've ever tasted!

If I'm not mistaken most so-called "off the shelf" Haggis doesn't actually contain a lot of the yukky dubious bits which are banned in the US. For example, the bit that its all wrapped in is synthetic, rather than a real sheep's stomach.

Intersting that you're not allowed to eat sheep's lungs, yet Texans can still eat rattlers..!

I think it's hilarious that you can put al manner of food additives in stuff including HFC, but you can't have a young brie (or sheep's lungs)!
