I was filling out the paper work for our k1 visa and it was asking about my parents and now I'm kinda concerned, I"m not on the best terms with my family and in the past they went out of their way to make problems for any relationship I been in, they're also super xenophobic and racist to say the lest. I know if they get asked anything they will lie and try there best to ruin things ugh. I'm also estranged from a large bulk of them as one can imagine. So they know nothing of our relationship and I plan to keep it that way.

Would they be contacted at any point in the k1 process? And if my family is contacted is there a way I can give imagination a heads up not just for the sake of our visa but for their own safety as I have some family is rather mentally unstable to say the least.

As I've experienced, to reduce the risk that they'll find out sooner than later, make sure you don't have any social media profiles that reveal your relationship, even under a fake name. With all the friends of friends, and "profile suggestion to friend based on contact lists", there isn't any privacy.

I never had social media myself and don't see the point, at least not the USA with how everyone it fights 24/7 or tries to cause problems for others or is just showing off.

But I know all to well about the danger of having it with a family like mine. When I was younger my mother caught wind of someone I was helping trough a support program for former foster kids who aged out and had no family, she assumed I was dating her...  She was a few states over from were my family lived and she tracked her down on facebook and harassed the ####### out of her. With nothing more then a first name to go by... yeah. There was anther case where I had a few dates with someone in anther state too, I never told anyone about it as it was just a few dates and we were not a match, apparently someone in my family found out about it online and they harassed the girl so much she went to the cops, they even harassed the staff at her workplace and that led her to losing her job. And the crazy thing is she never posted a single photo of us online, just said she had dated someone with the same first name as mine in a passing public post. There was even a point in time where they went on dating sites and told women not to talk to me and spread rumor about me being menially ill going as far to make fake profiles of me...

My life is far better not having them in it anymore and I'd like to keep it that way if you can't tell.
