we're in america, we furriners should all speak english.. because if not we're bad, and we dont respect God, the constitution and the country.... and other people get pissed off

(btw this stupid commentary, is because the stupidity that they made at work.. while on vacations they moved my desk. because i spoke 'too much spanish' with the other hispanic rep, and 'in this office the official language is english'... they could have asked in a civilized way, but no, they have to act like xenophobic azzhatz)

Pedroh,

I'm not one to stir the pot but I would certainly say that you have an open and closed case of discrimination on your hands. Even if your co-workers are azzhats, the boss should have stepped in and intervened. At my job, that's a big fat NONO!!! I certainly respect a person who can learn English as a 2nd language, it's not easy and to be perfectly honest, it's not easy to speak if it's your ONLY language (as it is with me)... so pat yourself on the back and don't allow anyone to discriminate against you!

Dawn

Right on! Being multi-lingual is cool!

*Whose language did you communicate in - yours or your partners - and why?

we communicate in English-Justin doesn't speak Spanish (yet  )

*Are there any positive sides to not speaking the same mother tongue?

mmm...well, I think I speak English pretty decently and I use it on my job on a daily basis, so the communication is fluent and it doesn't have a lot of impact in our relationship...but It has caused a few laughs :D I'll make a mistake here and there that will make Justin laugh, and he got himself in a few funny situations while he was here because of the language difference

*Did you ever feel frustrated or misunderstood? When?

there are certain situations that make it harder for me to modulate, and I loose clarity...for example, if I'm really tired or asleep...or have a cold or if I'm crying. Other than that, I don't feel frustrated or misunderstood. I don't think he feels misunderstood either.

*In which situations did you most feel the language barrier?

There are certain jokes in Spanish that I can't share with Justin, because it would be very difficult to explain...other than that, I don't feel a language barrier

*What is it like to argue in a foreign language?

Haven't had experience with that yet. What I'm worried about is that when I get upset, I tend to speak fast...with all the communications problems that will bring

Excellent topic! Here go my answers....

Whose language did you communicate in - yours or your partners - and why?

We are both multilingual. Usually we talk in English, or Spanish. Bren is teaching me German and I am teaching him French and Italian. This house is Babel gone Wild ;) Why? Because we believe that being monolingual is nothing to be proud of (no pun intended so please no one raise up in protest, ok?) ; because we love reading literary and academic work in its original language, and because we are nerds (proven and certified ones lol) ANDDDD because we want our offspring to be multilingual (offspring still non-existent as this post is being typed).

Are there any positive sides to not speaking the same mother tongue?

I can still sneak in one or two expletives he doesn't know... but he catches on fast, this one he he.

Did you ever feel frustrated or misunderstood? When?

sometimes my English or his Spanish gets us in trouble - little nuances and commonplaces that we misinterpret!

In which situations did you most feel the language barrier?

Same as prior poster: when I'm on the phone with my family in Mexico he cannot get the whole scoop - and then I'm meanie enough to tell him: yes baby we're talking about you ;).

What is it like to argue in a foreign language?

Arguing is blah. In any language. We DO have the "sh!t book" though... a journal where we write to each other, whether good or bad stuff, and the other replies in either language... this is a good tip, by the way.

Peace, L. :goofy:

please state your argument... why is it correct to move me to another desk to avoid 'too much spanish' while on vacation, instead of just telling me in a reasonable way..which i have might agreed

Were you guaranteed a specific desk in your contract with the firm?

Mr. Big Dog,

There's always a case, there is only the question of actually winning such a case.

There's still no case.

Good Luck on that!

ETA: Some judge thought he had a $60MM case over a misplaced pair of pants. I suppose he's been advised by some Devil's Advocate on that too.
