According to the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs about one million Australians live overseas (a number that is growing), about 70% professionals. Make of that what you will.

1 million out of 20 is a significant number, I think.

4.5% of Australians are living abroad.

9.2% of Brits are living Abroad.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I'll gather most of those Brits are retirees and most of those Australians are young professional people.

That is because Australians like to travel; Not because they do not want to live in Aus.

Both Melbourne and Sydney are always listed in almost all top 10 city listed. The cities are modern, clean, open and safe.

These are not travellers, these are emigres. I know Melbourne and Sydney are lovely cities, I was offered a transfer to Sydney in my old company but to accept it would have been professional suicide. If you want to get ahead in many industries you have to leave Australia, neither city is a major hub of business even in Asia-Pacific.

How long ago was this? Over the past 5 years the Australian economy has rocketed ahead. 4.3% unemployment.

No offense, but it has enough resources to buy and sell 1,000,000 Londons.

PS Plus Australia has gotten to this point without exploiting the world; as England did in the past.

it was recent! Incidentally, the local girl they hired for that job has since relocated to Hong Kong. For career progression, natch.

Which industry are you specifically talking about? Most people go to AUS for balance of extremely high living standards to a decent salary. Vice versa I have a friend who migrated from HK to Melbourne because he had better opportunities there.

My friend in London working for Credit Suisse is earning over 150,000 pounds yet he hates it there. Everything is extremely expensive. Very little is open past 7pm, even in London. Apartments are the size of a shoe box yet expensive. Income Taxes and the VAT rate is also ridiculous. He is actually looking at moving to the US next year.

On the other hand another friend of mine who is a 'brick layer' in the gold coast is earning over up to $950 USD a day. So for him Australia is the place to be.

entertainment. there's no doubt you can have a high quality of life in Oz. I know people in many industries - finance, advertising, insurance, IT, book publishing etc who love Oz but found better opportunities in Europe or other parts of Asia.

I am sure most migrating from the UK are not moving overseas solely for the money.

It is relative anyway. Earning $90,000 USD in the UK has the same buying power as someone earing $50,000 USD in the US and probably $60,000 USD in Australia.

I was looking at international jobs one day, for fun of course. In the field I was looking at, people made $50K in US... in the same field in the UK they were paying 50K sterling. So really twice as much. Yes yes I know UK is expensive. But living in Chicago, were a decent house in an OK neighborhood is well over $400K, I believe I could get a better housing deal in London, considering twice my pay.

As for who will pay taxes once all the Brits leave? There will be tons of new immigrants to take their place. Since the EU opened up borders to eastern european countries to legally work in the UK, tons and tons have moved there. Most European countries salaries are $300-400 USD a month, if that. So now doing the same thing in the UK for $4000 USD is a wow factor. They pay takes to the UK... some even double pay in their home country for earnings abroad. They pay the same high prices of food & housing and are tremendously happy at the opportunity. So the Brits leaving, will have educated folks taking their ranks.

I believe (dont know cause I'm not one), that Brits are leaving not specifically due to the $$$ factor, but unhappiness with the country. Maybe space, crime or whatever, but I dont believe financials play the #1 role.

The US is no longer the cup of tea it was 15 yrs ago. Housing market is poor, jobs dont pay like they used too. I'm not saying its real bad, just that our purchasing power is decreasing, and the Bush team is doing nothing about it... ooops no more politics :P

A Brit can take my place in the US, and somewhere down the line of life, I'll take off somewhere else. ;)

You believe wrong.

Maybe you are right, maybe not. This was my estimate looking at places on the internet for sale in London, compared to downtown Chicago.

Mawilson, how much are property taxes in the UK? Just wondering for comparison, as here that makes a huge difference in cost of living.

I do not believe there are enough recieving immigrants to pay taxes to replace those that are leaving. All of what you said makes sense though, an example is the much overburdened health system which is being leeched on all sides, especially by incompetant unneeded management. The government throw money at it but nothing is improving.

the UK is also running out of NHS dentists, fights for a half decent school, lack of support if child is bullied, way overpriced fuel, the whole housing thing!

An example of an unhappy life situation not so much involved in money is crime*. That's because our "justice" system is so backwards it seems to blame and punish victims instead of those doing the crime. A woman got fined in Runcorn because some teens were sitting on her fence and swearing at her and her child, when they were actually standing in her property she pushed one of the boys who fell back, hit his head and was knocked unconcious...

The mother of the boy said SHE was in the wrong place at the wrong time!

Luckily someone came forward and paid the fee for her out of sympathy but that's hardly the point.

Sorry it's getting off topic, but it's one of those things that grinds my gears

*Running out of land to build more prisons, and nobody wants one on their front door!
