Reentry permit questions.

Hello, 

 

My spouse applied for a reentry permit in December of 2022. We left the US in February. I know it takes a long time to process but let’s say it takes two years to approve would it then be issued for an additional two years? So four years total from when he applied or do they count the time to approve against the validity of it? We’re not sure how long exactly we are going to stay out of the US.  Also, if we need additional time we have to go back and reapply for a new reentry permit from within the US, correct? I looked for some answers in the forum but didn’t see exactly what I was looking for.
