I've taken driving test in state where I'm living and i issued DL is still valid , hoping my I,765 comes through before it needs renewing !

Ah, excellent! Then yes, everything others have said. Expect higher rates as someone under 25, definitely get supplemental insurance

I'm assuming you don't have your own car insurance at this point, and the insurance via credit card is also probably out, so make sure the supplemental insurance from the car rental covers third party liabilities (in case you get into an accident and is found to be at fault) as well as damage to the rented car

International driver licenses only serve as legal translations of the original license, I think?

(And not all states/countries require it)

So if the original license is not valid anymore due to residency requirement, the translation won't be either.

From AAA

like i said to OP and from your site

An IDP must be issued in the same country as the driver’s license of the traveler.

and most car rental places require us license when a student has been here 3 to 6 months depending on the state

Right, there's that too (though some motoring organizations, like AAA, would mail you the IDP if you apply after you're out of the country - it just takes longer).

Just pointing out that in many cases you don't even need an IDP anyway - I rented and drove without one in the Netherlands, the US, and UK before with a license from a different country.

In OP's case a US state license is needed, but OP said they have it already.
