Anyone here use Mozilla's Thunderbird/ & Lightning as alternatives to Outlook?

If so how good is it, does it work well with Vista?

I upgraded my MS Office 2007 and the version I have did not come with Outlook, so I am looking for alternatives to Outlook.

How do you guys feel about Mozilla Thunderbird?

Thunderbird is fine, but it does lack some of the features that outlook has, but then if you never use those features you wont be missing anything.

Yeah I use thunderbird at work as I prefer it to outlook, you can download free plug ins for it that generally replace most of the lost functionality, for example you can download a calender plugin and a backup plugin etc.

Thank you for the reply, I downloaded T-Bird and I like the interface especially with the ability to change the appearance, I use it for my G.mail, however we went to set it up for my wife's Hotmail and we were not able to configure it to work with Hotmail.

I also downloaded the calendar plug-in, nice addition.

I hope it is stable under Vista OS.

Thank you for the reply, I had to purchse 2007 Office when I bought my new PC and the version of Office I purchased did not come with Outlook, I had been using Outlook express for years, I do not want to go and pay another bag of money just for Outlook.

I like Thunderbird, it is fine. gmail's web interface is very good, much better than hotmail. I would strongly recommend moving to gmail if you can.

Hotmail doesn't allow POP3 access like Gmail does. I think you can pay for that feature if you really need it. If you want to use an outside client for Hotmail, you are limited to Outlook and Outlook Express.

POP3 is a protocol used my most mail systems and mail clients to access and download email. IMAP is another similar protocol, but instead of downloading the messages, it keeps them on the server. There are other protocols, but they are usually limited to certain email clients and severs, like Exchange.

I switched to Thunderbird at work because Outlook had so much trouble with Oracle calendaring services. (Techies at work could not find a reliable solution either although we have some good people.) I have been very happy with Thunderbird.

2 points:

1.) Outlook and Outlook Express are not the same application. Outlook is an enterprise-level mail, messaging, and scheduling client among other things. Outlook Express is a teeny little e-mail client.

2.) Windows Vista does not use Outlook Express; it uses a new application called Windows Mail.

Additional Points:

1) Outlook and Outlook Express both suck.

2) Thunderbird r0xx0rz!

1) It isn't part of the Evil Empire

2) It's free

3) It isn't a virus-enabling application, like most Microsquish products.

4) You can EASILY have seperate inboxes for different email accounts or have them all go to one inbox.

5) Can have different themes - ie: minimal, fancy, MacOS-like, Gnome-like, etc.

6) Cool extensions are available to add functionality.

7) see #1
