:ot: : I went out with some friends to Brick Lane markets today, and I bought myself a treat to cheer myself up... I spent TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY POUNDS on a piece of - well, it's sort of art, and sort of a homeware thing, and it's GORGEOUS, and I fell in love with it the second I saw it, and couldn't bear to walk out without it... but I'm so amazed at myself; under normal circumstances I wouldn't have bought it, even at a quarter of the price; I'm so cautious with money, and I've been saving for so long... but it was one of those rare things where you just KNOW that if you don't buy it, you will always regret it, you know? and I've got it lying here on my bed and I love it so much :)

I've officially gone mad

we want pics! Good for you, you deserve a treat after the stress you've had this week.

I am so cautious (not about money) but about buying anything that will have to be shipped to the US. I used to be a furniture restorer and when I moved I decided to get rid of absolutely everything. I regret it sometimes, but I had some beautiful pieces of furniture that I just would have ended up spending a fortune shipping had I decided to keep it all. There is no way I could have saved up enough money to move all of it 300 miles north and then over to the States. So, when the beloved furniture went, all the other 'stuff' seemed secondary. I wish I had been more into nic-nacs, that way I might not have worried so much. I have kept some paintings and a selection of books that mean a lot to me (I also dabbled in book-selling so most of those had to go too) and one piece of furniture that I made for my parents.

babbles - that sounds like an awesome job!! What part of Cali are you moving to again?! You may have to help us with the decor

I'm a hoarder - I have TONS of stuff - I am going to take over what I can't bear to be apart from and ship the rest - in bits if I need to because as much as it shouldn't work out like this, my stuff is me - I can't imagine settling into a place without my bits and pieces all over

I loved that job but never made very much money so after 5 years I decided to go out and get a proper job :P. I used to be a hoarder, had hundreds of books, cds, pictures etc but I've moved 7 times in as many years thanks to university and relocating for various reasons so I'd had enough of hanging on to stuff. I've taken a few small things I can't bear to be parted with on trips out there.

I'm moving to Bakersfield. Not sure where you're going? I'm pretty handy, I've gutted houses in the past, made and restored furniture. I'm looking forward to us getting our own place, preferably an oldish 20s or 30s house so I can get stuck into renovating again. I'm sure once that happens I'll build up the hoarding habit again :P

I'll post a picture when I get a chance to take one :)

the thing is, I SO rarely do things like this... the only other time I can really remember was when I bought an Oroton bag at a factory outlet for about $180 (Australian dollars), which is nowhere near as much as this... of course I've bought myself treats from time to time, but in the order of £15 or so

I really am mad... I blame my friend Johanna, who just stood there saying 'buy it... you know you want to... you'll always regret not buying it... just get it'

and I can justify it any manner of ways - my postcard business is now more that £400 in profit; perhaps I used that money :D

or, it's just one month's savings on rent, compared to what I used to pay (and I moved in July ;) )

and I hardly ever go out for dinner these days, and if you take £20 as an average London dinner (which is conservative), that's only a year's worth :D

and so on ;)

I'm going to ship a lot of stuff... I think (hope?) it won't be too much; I've researched it and I think it will be fine... I really hope it won't break the bank

and mum's got this plan to set up a scheme whereby anyone who asks her about giving us a gift can contribute to the shipping fund... I'd never ask people for money, but if they're asking her, and she's happy to organise it, I won't say no

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

The wedding gift thing is a fantastic idea. Oh well, my stuff is all gone now! I survived! :P

Yeah, I've just seen a bag I really want but I can't justify spending the money (since I don't have a postcard business :( )- so I think my mum is going to buy it for my birthday :D

Haha - Bakersfield - isn't that just north of LA? I'm going to be near San Bernardino - Yucaipa/Banning/Beaumont way :) We'll have to get together :D

STP - I can't wait to see!! Great that your little business is in profit! I am hoping mine will pick up more when I actually do something with it - have let it stagnate here cause can't see the point in establishing anything proper now :)

As for shipping - well it will all get stored here at mums until I can afford it to be sent over - it might be a while but it will get here eventually :)

@ STP: i want to see your art-thingy too!!!!!

when i was in frankfurt for the medical i caved in and bought myself a new sweater, even though i had promised to myself to not buy anything that i have to ship...... oh, and i bought new earrings. but they are tiny, so i only feel bad about the money and not about the weight.....

wish i could call the airline and say: if i sign a contract that i will lose 10 pounds until the day of my flight, will i then be allowed to take additional 10 pounds of clothes and books with me?????????????

I've thought about that too

the art-thingy is BEAUTIFUL, but it is absolutely not worth £240

I just wanted it so much, I paid it anyway... as I said: temporary madness ;)

that's just to prepare you; you're going to say 'is that it?!'
