Hello, my husband (English citizen) is applying for a CR-1 visa and one of the required documents is his J-1 visa from 2016. However, the old passport his visa was in was destroyed and he does not have any other documentation at hand that officially proves that he was granted his J-1 visa. Does anyone have a similar experience with this problem? We're not sure where to go from here, and are worried since the J-1 visa documentation is listed under "required documents". Any advice is appreciated.

Can you link where on USCIS it states documents from J-1 are required for the initial petition?

Have you received an RFE for the J-1 visa information?

What stage of the application are you at? Initial filing? RFE before NOA2, NVC stage? or RFE at NVC stage?

We're at the NVC stage where i upload the affidavit of support and he uploads the DS-260. We have not received an RFE for the J-1 visa information, but it is listed as a required document for the applicant.

I was asked the same thing and uploaded a scan of my previous visa but ultimately it never showed "accepted", only submitted (i got DQ in December).

I think you can just write an explanation of the situation and upload it in place of the visa.

If there was a J-1 visa issue, it should have come up at USCIS.  If the visa was destroyed with the passport, the worst case is that you explain that when asked.
