Hey Visa Journey!

Hypothetical question. If a person is a passort holder from a country that doesn't have visa requirements eg.Canada, UK and they need to travel outside of the U.S. right after naturlization, are they able to return to the states with valid foreign passport and their naturlization certificate? Would that individual have to wait for their U.S. passport to be issued or can they travel and re-enter the states while the U.S. passsport is still pending?

Much Thanks!

Airlines are instructed not to accept the naturalization certificate for air travel: https://www.cbp.gov/sites/default/files/assets/documents/2019-Mar/2019 Carrier Information Guide - ENGLISH.pdf

Thus you would have to present yourself at a US land POE (i.e. you would have to come in via land from either Canada or Mexico) if you only want to use the naturalization certificate. http://web.archive.org/web/20200929115350/https://www.uscis.gov/us-citizens-traveling-internationally "You can also use your original certificate of citizenship or certificate of naturalization."

Or you can apply for your first US passport at a American Citizen Services unit abroad and then fly to the US after you get the passport: https://uk.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/u-s-passports/first-passport/

If you are in possession of any of the following documents, you may apply for your first passport in person through a pre-arranged appointment

  • A U.S. Birth Certificate;
  • A Consular Report of Birth Abroad (Form FS-240);
  • A Certification of Birth (Form FS-545 or DS-1350);
  • A U.S. Certificate of Citizenship;
  • A U.S. Naturalization Certificate; or
  • A passport of your U.S. citizen parent(s) in which you are included.

  I figured there must have been some type of protocol for foreign passport holders who don't require visas during such circumstances.Thank you for you such a detailed answer!
