Karen...u thinking of getting the check done and THEN going on the crime spree?

LoL I just saw this. Hehe! No actually I'm not. Just didn't want to get it now and then find out at my interview that it wasn't current enough.

Edit- I just dredged up my packet 3 from Montreal and in it states

" Contact your local police service or the RCMP regarding criminal record check procedures. Certificates may be issues by the police force so long as they note that CPIC or the national criminal records repository was seacrhed using your name and date of birth."

It doesn't say you must go through the RCMP, but perhaps if you live rurally you should. I lived in a major urban area so my local police were fine.

I would feel horribly if I gave incorrect information, so I had to check for myself. This clearly states you can go through your local police, so long as they check CPIC, which is what I have stated prior.

I hope this clears it up.

Again, it's up to you and you can always call Montreal if you are really concerned.

Phew! That seems pretty clear to me. Thanks for the CPIC breakdown. It makes sense now.

i did both rcmp and city police certificate. isummited my fingerprint in last sept and i got it back around last nov. and i just had my interview at march31, and i brought both of them. the lady there told me rcmp certificate is the best...but she didnt say the city police certificate didnt work, but they would prefer a rcmp fingerprint check certificate from what i think. however, my suggestion is if u have time, do a rcmp certificate, it will support u better:D

How'd the interview go? :) And can you update your timeline? :)

FYI, I called Montreal about 2 weeks ago to ask them about this after being told by RCMP that they currently are on a 5 month turn around time. Montreal told me that so long as it's done Canada wide, it's no problem getting it at your local police department.

The RCMP's 5 month turn around is for finger printing. If you just require the canada wide background check, the time varies from station to station. Some take minutes, others can take up to a week. One only requires fingerprinting if they have had a criminal record in the past.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I just called local OPP and they said I could do it at city police.

City police said they use CPIC - cost is ony $20. and takes 2 days.

Saves me time trying to get to RCMP when I do medical in Wpg.
