We have the IR-2 interviews set for my wife's two kids. Their natural father has consented to them coming with us.

We just got an email implying we may need her marriage certificate for her previous marriage. We have our marriage certificate and the certified divorce decree between her and the father of the boys.

"If the applicant is a stepchild, on the appointment date applicant must provide original marriage certificate from the  petitioner and father/mother of the applicant, an original or certified copy of every prior marriage of the petitioner and the applicant’s natural parent.  If the petitioner or applicant’s natural parent was previously married, the applicant must also provide all prior divorce decrees for every prior marriage from the petitioner and the natural parent."

Are they really requiring both the previous marriage certificate and divorce decree both? I never saw previous marriage certificates as a requirement in all the documents before this email. Would they even issue a marriage certificate for a dissolved marriage?

Thanks

It's listed in the document checklist for immigrant visa interview at the US embassy in San Jose, Costa Rica --

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/Supplements/Supplements_by_Post/SNJ-San-Jose.html#pre_interview_checklist

If you are the petitioner’s stepchild: The original marriage certificate of the petitioner and your biological parent, English translation, and a photocopy along with divorce records for any previous marriages of either parent.

A marriage certificate would have been issued when your wife got married to her ex.  Just get a copy of that.  You don't need a new one to be issued.

We have both of these things. Our marriage cert and her divorce decree. This list does not say that it also requires the marriage certificates of past marriages in addition to the divorce decrees..

In case anyone else runs into this, we got a response back from them.

They said the divorce certificate is sufficient because it is a full divorce certificate with the full details of the marriage that is now defunct and not just a certificado de soltería.  The latter just states your current marital status, but the former shows the full details of the marriage.
