Did anyone ever try to bring back bread baking mixes from Germany? They have a lot more varieties there and I'll be in Germany next week. Soooo... I'm thinking about bringing some back, but I don't want to get into trouble at customs.

I had all kinds of salad dressing mixes (the powdery stuff) and chocolate, wine and candy with my last time, and it was no problem. I declared it and the customs officer joked why I didn't like local salad dressing. However, flour and seeds might be different.

Does anyone have any experience?

JundP, enjoy the visit! I'm sure you'll have a blast! And he will probably be glad to escape the s***t weather in Germany at the moment.

Thanks! Yeah, but then I get to have the freezing cold at Christmas :)

Last time P came he brought some damfnudeln (sp?) and sauce mix. He always brings candy and mead and stuff like that, so I can't imagine you'd have a problem.

Hey Guys,

I've been reading that thread for a while but had never really time to post :)

For the breadquestion: I bought that bread from Ikea once. The one that looks like a milk carton. And I have to say it tasted awesome. You just put water in shake it really good and pour it in a baking dish. Its a very hearty bread with a lot of seads. YUMMY!!! :)

My sister brought some breadmixes from germany last december and my dad sent me some in the mail. Both wasnt a problem. My dad even sent me a whole Stollen from the bakery we always go to in germany :)

I dont think it will be a problem at customs. We are flying to Germany in December and I already know that I will bring back the powdery salad dressing and chocolate :D That dressing here just doesnt taste right for me :D

Have a great rest of the weekend!

Yummy, stollen ;)

I am so looking forward to getting Labello and Nivea when P gets here :) There's a little German deli down the street from the school where I work and they sell things like Kaba and apfelshorle and at Christmas they have Gluwein (sp?) too. Do you have anything like that around where you live?

Unfortunatly, we don't have anything like that. We have one or two German restaurants with tiny shops where you can get Essiggurken and such things.

I use germandeli.com when I need things or have my mom send me something. And of course every visitor from Germany has to bring goodies.

Yeah, fortunately CA is pretty international. There are several little German stores arround here, and at least one restaurant. But it's pretty expensive, so I only buy stuff once in a while. But it's good to know, in case I have a really bad craving for something, I could probably find it.

But you can buy Nivea in regular supermarkets, at least here... Especially in hispanic stores.

germandeli.com has Austrian Nutella, aka peanut-free.... *dreamdreamdream*

If you live at the East coast look for Harris Teeter, their bread is really good (and expensive).

@germanangel: yeah, hee hee. P knows to start stocking up before he comes. But the same when I go there. His family lived in Boston for 6 years, and my bff in Nurnberg loves American stuff, so when I go there (or he goes back home) out come the American goods. Top of the list? Toothpaste, cake mix and chocolate chips!

@Steffi, I love the Nivea in the tins though, and I haven't been able to find it here. I can get the soap though.

@Anna is the Nutella sold in the states different? Because I know I can get it at Costco here (my daughter loves it).

On another note, I bought P an engagement ring. I guess it's not too big a deal there, but I wanted one (hee hee) and so he decided he wanted one too. It came in the mail yesterday and I'm soooooooooooo excited. Everything is so focused on stupid dates and when to file and what paperwork to gather and all of that. Sometimes it takes all the romance out of everything. I know the end result (aka being together) is what matters, but still. So I've planned a little proposal when he gets here. A bit unorthodox I suppose, but still...

*Nutella-Expert/Addict*

Yes, the US Nutella is different.

USA Nutella: sugar, peanut oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skimmed milk, reduced mineral whey, partially-hydrogenated peanut oil, soy lecithin (an emulsifier), vanillin (an artificial flavor).

Germany: sugar, vegetable oil, hazelnuts (13%), low fat cocoa (8%), skimmed milk powder (7.5%), emulsifier: lecithin, vanillin.

The US Nutella claims a jar of hazelnuts per bite or so, so we don't know how many hazelnuts are in there! Also, it tastes slightly like peanuts and contains partially hydrogenated oil which isn't exactly healthy nor natural. I don't know why they change the recipe, I really hate the peanut taste, Nutella is supposed to taste like chocolate-hazelnuts.

The Nutella I buy at the commisary here is peanut oil free. "Ingredients there are: Sugar, Modified Palm Oil, Hazelnuts, Cocoa, Skim Milk, Reduced Minerals Whey (From Milk), Soy Lecithin: An Emulsifier, Vanilin: An Artificial Flavor". I don't know about the Modified Palm Oil, but it tastes just like the Nutella in Germany. I don't miss a lot of things but every now and then I get me some fish or Gewuerzgurken or just some Bahlsen Cookies.

On my Nutella Glass it says "over 50 Hazelnuts per jar"...

If you have a WorldMarket where you live try their hazlenut spread housebrand. IMHO, the stuff tastes just like German Nutella (no peanut in sight) and the jars are much larger. WorldMarket also has imported Gewürzgurken, Sauerkraut, Rotkraut (all I think from Hengstenberg) and Pfanni products.

I used to miss Flammkuchen (just doesn't turn out right when I try to make it myself) - but I discovered that Trader Joe's sells frozen Tarte d'Alsace which looks and tastes very much like the Flammkuchen I loved to get from Aldi.

hehe you guys really sound like nutella addicts :) My sister loves nutella too. For me its the haribo gummibears or raspberry jam. The haribos here just taste slighty different and I havent found a good jar of jam here yet. But I keep triing :) as soon as the one I imported is empty............or I get another package from germany.\

My husband and me both had or have our birthdays in june and july so we got a lot of kinder chocolate and things like that. Unfortunately it is so hot here that everything melted in the package. Oh it hurt so much to just throw it out :crying:

I havent found a german store in MA yet but we have friends in NH and they have a little store tehre where I usually buy salad dressing or for christmas ginger bread :) But that stuff is ridiculusly (sp?) expensive. But as evi said....sometimes you just have to have it :)

@Susanne, it hurts my heart to think of Kinder being thrown away! :) I love that stuff, but I really loved the Pingui (sp?) which obviously you can't have sent to you.

@Thea, I'm going to go check out World Market for the hazelnut spread. The last time P was here for a visit we spent about an hour walking through one in downtown Seattle, but there's one closer to my house. I'm excited now! I'll go after work tonight.

@Evi....um, that baby of yours? He's so adorable! Just had to say it :)
