Can a USA/Germany dual citizen pass dual citizenship onto descendants?

I don't believe the child would need to choose a single citizenship at any point, if the child was born with dual citizenship and at least one of the parents is German. If you find a source that says the opposite, please post it.

I think you are right - only children of parents without German citizenship seem to be required to do so. I’m still not 100% sure since I know that Germany is very interested in preventing dual citizenship unless there are valid reasons for it. Being able to pass it on indefinitely seems like something they wouldn’t want. But until there’s a valid source, I assume that’s actually the case.
