Hi Guys

This question gets asked every few years ( but the last responses I found were in 2014 so hoping for a newer response).

I moved to the USA in mid december 2017 on a CR1. My wife moved with me ( she was the USC) . Now she wasn't working abroad but I was. My understanding is that since I moved in the middle of the year and had no US Income for 2017 and my wife had no income at all we were not required to file income taxes . Is that that correct ? If so can someone point me to the relevant article on the IRS website.

Secondly by the time I file the n400 in September 2020 I should have both 2018 and 2019 taxes.  But the response to the following questions in the N400 would be

Yes and attach a letter here that says that I did not file in 2017 as I has no US source income and was not required to file as per the __ IRS rule.

How about—

I was a resident alien in the US for only 1 month in tax year 2017. My income was $0 during that period and below the filing threshold of $4050 as stated in Chart A, page 8 of the 2017 Form 1040 Instructions. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040gi--2017.pdf
