Mental Disorder & K-1 Fiance Visa

Hello all,

I am a U.S. citizen, going through the process of the K-1 visa with my Fiance from Germany.

We met 8 years ago, while we were in high school during an exchange year for him. We have lots of emotions going through this process, and you can imagine our excitement when we received the approval from NVC that our case was moving forward.

Now we are compiling the documents and needed forms and preparing for the medical exam and embassy interview.

Now for the hard part: My fiance has been diagnosed with BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) and therefore has a history of mental health struggles. He has, in the past, self-harmed, been on medication, and received therapy.

However, for the past 2-3 years, he has overcome the darkest parts of his struggles, been self-harm free, and weened entirely off his medication.

My fiance is completely self-functioning, has never been unemployed, and without knowing his personal background you would never guess that he has a mental disorder.

My question now is:

1. How do we go about the medical appointment, and how should he be prepared to answer/give information on the day of the interview?

I am aware that the embassy, and U.S. officials would like to see that those they are letting in are not a threat to themselves or the public. This can be proved for my fiance, and we have compiled reports from his physicians such as: his therapist of 5 years, psychologist, and general doctor. Within their reports they state that he is not of harm to himself any longer, and that he is and has never been a threat to others. The reports also will state his positive state and how he is stable.

2. We know that being honest is the best way to handle the process, and that is what we plan to do. With that being said, is there anything else we should do in order to prepare for this?

Thank you in advance for the help and any advice! It is appreciated!

To be prepared for the Medical. Get a detailed letter from his/her Doctor that the is not a danger to him/her self or others.

This will help smooth things over.

We wen through this with my wife. Due to not having the letter we were delayed a few days to get the required letter from her UK health service.

If you have this letter it should make things go better and you should have minimal problems.
