Questions about Moving to the US with Furniture and Car

Hey guys,

 

My fiancee is from the Toronto area and she will be moving down to be with me in Michigan at the end of August. She will be coming down on a K-1 Visa.

 

We want to bring a queen bed frame/mattress, 2 couches, cookingware, a tv, and my fiancee's clothes and other belongings from her parents' house (they were in Canada, but are selling their house and moving temporarily to another country) and my fiancee's car, which is a 180k km, 10yo van.

The furniture/goods situation is kind of tricky. Due to the timing of everything, we want to move the furniture and other stuff to our place in MI before we actually get married.

If I brought it by myself before the wedding, would that lead to higher customs? Could I get all of this stuff under my personal exemption? Or should we have her bring it over from Canada herself before or after the wedding? (We would need an I-94 for this?)

 

I'm kind of at a lost on where to begin to assess how to bring things over and whether it is worth bringing over.

1. Do you think the car is worth bringing over or should we sell it and get a new car in the States?

2. How should we navigate customs for the furniture/goods?

Also apparently her parents want to bring the car at a later time after we are married in the States. Has anyone done something like that?

Okay youre wanting to bring the items when your fiance immigrates or before? Or after?  The car will be harder but you can import if after the fact (you have a year.)
