SSA - Updating Citizenship Status by Mail

Hi all,

I know that typically after obtaining US citizenship, the recommendation is to go to SSA office with the naturalization certificate and update the status by showing them the certificate and file SS-5 form.

Alternatively, one can also mail the SS-5 form and mail original proof of citizenship, and they would mail it back later.

My wife will soon have both a US passport book and card. We only asked for the card as a secondary proof of citizenship. We are considering to mail SS-5 form along with original passport card to avoid the hassle going to SSA office which is far from where we live and very disorganized, it would save me from taking a day off from work. Has anyone here tried to do that by mail?

Walk-in for me with the original naturalization certificate. Took under 10 minutes while they made a photocopy of it (wouldn’t accept the copy I brought to give them).

Thanks for the response! Yes I think the vast majority do it this way. I myself have done it this way when I got the citizenship. But this time the SAA office is very far from where we live and we're not in a hurry, and since my wife will have both the card and passport book we're not too worried about mailing the card.
