Hi All,

I am applying OCI for myself. After reading through the very confusing instructions (or lack of), I decided to hop on here to ask questions/get answers and understand the process better so that I can prepare my packet and get this last piece of the puzzle done.

So a little background, I immigrated over to the USA in and married my American husband in 2011. I finally completed my Naturalization process in 2017. I put it off a bit but I finally got a US passport in April 2019. I know, I know I put it off for a bit and you all must think I am crazy but I sort of forgot about getting my passport. Luckily I haven't had any emergencies or urgent situations pop up that required travel outside of the country.

Anyway, long story short, here are my questions:

1. I started doing the Application on the CKGS website but I am unable to find a proper checklist that I can print? Everything is very complicatedly written send this OR this OR this OR that. Do I have to send all that I have or is it just a single thing in each category? I just want to understand what I am sending and what needs to be original/copy/notarized, if that makes sense?

2. Can anyone explain the envelope system to me please? I need to send it via a certain way with a return envelope? Can I send it via USPS or does it have to be FedEx or UPS?

3. I am an Indian Citizen born in Dubai UAE do I need to send in my Birth Certificate? Original, Copy or Notarized? It is in English and Arabic. Am I going to have problems? Also, do I need to send my parents marriage certificate or passport pages proving they are Indian Nationals?

4. I am apply to the Atlanta Jurisdiction can I Renounce and Apply for OCI at the same time?

5. When do I send in my US passport? Is it at a later stage? (Also, spouses name is not printed in US passport?)

Thanks for any help in demystifying these instructions, I forgot how roundabout we Indian's truly are!

Just fill out the form, once you are done you can print the said "checklist". I'm sure its a generic, I'll see if I can upload it.

They give you options to either pay for your own or let them handle it. Honestly the guidelines are so vague and strict at the same time, I figured it is just easier and hassle free for them to handle it. It totals USD 60 for fed ex. the benefit of letting them choose is that the mails will be delivered next day.

Yes should be fine, you will have to proove your indian connection, so your Birth certificate showing your parents name and your parents indian passport should suffice. Note that they are a stickler for names to be exactly as is, meaning the names on the birth cert and passport should match, this is moot if you have an indian passport then just use that.

4. I am apply to the Atlanta Jurisdiction can I Renounce and Apply for OCI at the same time?

Depends, I know CA you have to do it one at a time and TX you can send both at same time. Honestly my Renunciation was done in 6 days, they just held on to it till the OCI came as I did in TX. SOmeone who did it at CA, had to do renun first and then oCI and part of OCI was sending renun proof.

You send it during renunciation stage. They will mail it back the next day if they accept both (OCI and Renun) at same time or with your renun cert if done independantly.
