Immigration Bill will require US citizens to provide 5-yr work history when applying for work & to register jobs/wages with the IRS

... the bill would make it illegal to hire anyone for any work in the US for paid wages, unless both the worker and employer complete the new registration requirements, including providing the employee's work history for the past five years even if they are American citizens each time they apply for a job.

[...]

As it stands, the new bill would require all employers to "register" with the federal government and report the data for new employees to the government within three days of hiring them.

As such, the bill would fill in one of the last gaps in the government's tracking of wages, by making it a potential criminal or civil offense not to inform the government that a worker is receiving compensation of some sort, under the rubric of national security.

[...]

Each time an employer hires someone, they would have to phone in (1) their own EIN or social security number if they are an individual (2) the social security number of the new employee (3) the state of birth of the new employee (4) the EIN number or social security number of every single place the new employee has worked in the last five years (5) and the date of birth and address for the potential new employee.

[...]

All of the information is to be housed in a database created by the Social Security Administration that will be shared with the Department of Homeland Security, which has the authority to initiate investigations into all employers who don't participate in the system...

The Department of Homeland Security can receive "taxpayer identity information of each person [from a report which]...contains evidence of such person's failure to register and participate in the Electronic Employment Verification System."

As such, they can initiate an investigation into any person who doesn't comply with the mandatory electronic reporting system whether they are an employer or employee.

[...]

... a provision in the bill indicates that other branches of the government may benefit from the new database as well.

"Nothing...may be construed to limit the collection, maintenance, or use of data by the Commissioner of Internal Revenue or the Commissioner of Social Security as provided by law," says the proposed law.

[...]

If the bill passes, the most basic and private personal information about where American citizens work, their past work history, their birthdays and social security numbers will be called in to the government every time they apply for a job.

I already work in the Federal offshore petroleum industry (one of the most regulated). I have to be licensed and periodically mandated to undergo special training by law. My employer is routinely audited for compliance issues by the Federal government already. So what's the beef?

Bring it on! Nothing new for me.

I'm sure it might cause a few problems for outlaw employers, tax cheats, and illegal aliens. But I'm sure there are enough loopholes for most crooks to get around it.

You have to remember that this is Teddy's bill. He had his grubby hands in the 1986 immigration bill and we can see how that turned out. Need I say more?

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

Thats right... the only criminals don't want the government poking their noses wherever they want. Afterall, everyone knows the Government's only goal is the personal satisfaction of each of its citizens, and never abuses power! You have to go all the way back to England to find examples of Government Agencies abusing their power. Actually, I think we should all get an ID card so the Gov't can track our individual purchases, medical info, political beliefs, etc at all time. It can only serve to make this country a greater place to live!

So what's the beef?

Big Brother. That's the beef!

Here is some Big Brother beef.

lets seee... BushCo have so far declared they can, and actively do:

* Suspend habeas corpus (the right to a trial)

* Declare they can open your mail without telling anyone

* Declare they can tap your phone without telling anyone (before they had to ask for a warrant up to 3 days later)

* Put you on a no-fly list (remember the lawyer that had absolutely nothing to do with terrorism? he won a civil suit but still can't board a plane)

* Write themselves a letter allowing them to spy on a business (10s of thousands have been written - almost all of them are unquestionably abuses of power, even under a VERY loose definition of terrorism)

* Appoint loyal-to-the-death Yes-men and business cronies to ALL positions, without regard to their ability. (They can say "Yes sir" and hold their tongues. What other abilities do you need? They're doing a heck of a job!)

* Fire US attornies that prosecute allies, as well as attornies that do not wrongly prosecute enemies.

* hire political allies as militiry contractors, and have those contractors carry out military and police functions Half the US troops in Iraq are private mercenaries. The real # of troops is around 250,000 right now. Blackwater and other mercenary groups operated in New Orleans in Katrina and other places. - google "Blackwater"

* monitor your library records and your book purchases

* declare martial law, suspending Congress in an emergency (thats unheard of in the US, as is most of this)

* etc etc

But, of course, Bush really has nothing but the best interests of each and every American in his heart. He would never misuse the powers he appoints himself. He SAYS he won't, anyway!! He just wants these powers because he might need to use them one day, you know, to protect everyone.

The rest of the beef is things like the Prescription Drug benefit (that only benefits prescription drug companies by locking the US into full retail prices for all prescription drugs), the closed door energy policy written by the energy lobbby... actually, the rule of thumb is that if their is policy to be written on anything (timber, coal, banking, lending, etc) it is the lobbyists that actually write the bills. The only thing that Bush seems to NOT let the lobbyists write is things pertaining to what you can do to your own body (i.e. commit suicide, abortion, stem cell) or when lobbyists compete (e.g. foreign oil vs domestic farming)

It's a sad state of affairs indeed.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Pardon my French, but #######???

They're about to introduce a similar measure in the UK requiring UK citizens, even ones born here, to provide proof of their citizenship for employment purposes. That would mean producing a birth certificate or passport on demand.

That doesn't surprise me. The UK these days is as about as free as the former Soviet Union.

I just thought America had a bit more sense than that.
