I've never been to Italy and I'll be in the airport for all of three hours but wondered how good the shopping is at the Milan airport and what you all recommend getting...if anything. Also, are there any good food places inside there that sell good Italian food and pastries? Specifically cannolis would be great!!!

There wasn't much at all in the terminal I was in. I was flying Alitalia. But then again, I only had a 1 hour layover and I was running my butt off to get to where I needed to be. I did see a lot of people carrying around chickens though!

LIVE chickens???

I'm flying Alitalia too God willing if they don't go under by then. lol

Malpensa Airport has 2 terminals, but since you are flying from the US I assume you are landing at the new one (terminal 1). Milan main thing is fashion so the airport makes no difference and is full of boutiques of all sorts although I cannot remember if it is before or after you check in. Most stuff is very expensive though since it's designers. It is a big airport though so I am not sure how close you'll be to all the shopping when you land.

You won't have problems when it comes to food, it is everywhere in Italy and it is excellent no matter where you go/what you eat even though I am not sure what your taste is when it comes to that. Just stop at 'spizzico" (just to mention one) and have a slice of pizza there, it is not the traditional brick over but it is really good and cheap.

As far as people carrying chickens...I am not sure where that came from or what it meant exactly, I flew from/to/through there at least a couple dozen times and I never ever saw such thing, not even heard about it.

You'll be fine on Alitalia, they play their little game of going bankrupt each and every single year and it is all for tax purposes, I wouldn't worry though...they are not the friendliest when it comes to customer service or their crew but they have an outstanding crash rating which at the end of the day is what really matters when one flies.;)

Have a great trip and tell Milan I said hi. :)

k...wasn't thinkin' bout that. Maybe you're not familiar with my wicked intense fear of flyin' overseas.

:goofy:

Which leads me to a question if anyone cares to take a stab at it...........................................

When you are on the flight right before take off they show you the exits, the teach ya how to breath through the mask and even point out that you have a flotation device (like you'd really be able to use it after diving down at over 100 miles/hour into the Atlantic for 30,000 feet  )

.............why don't they give everyone a parachute?

Wouldn't it make sense to strap on one of those puppies on your way to the exits that you've been pointed towards?

No, I am no familiar with that since I don't know you..but I can totally relate...I'm absolutely frightened of flying, and not just overseas... :crying:

My big problem is taking off, once the plane gets going and the captain starts talking anf the crew starts moving around the aircraft and all then I relax.

My brother flew back via Milan a few weeks ago. He had 5+ hours to kill there and said that there wasn't much to do. If you're expecting something similar to Frankfurt or Schiphol, you're very likely out of luck.

I'm totally serious! I swear I saw at least 8 people carrying around a small crate with a chicken in it. Since this was my first experience in overseas flying I just thought it was the norm. I really wanted to take pictures, but I didn't want to look like the dork.

Try doing a non stop flight back to back 13 hours straight.

I LOVE taking off and landing. It's the wicked choppy turbulance while 30,000 ft in the air that kind of gets to me.
