Employment authorisation and SSC

Hi,

I arrived on a K1 visa last month and went to the SS office last week. All went smoothly and I am waiting for my card to arrive. I know this card will not be valid for work as I have not yet filed the employment authorisation form which I am currently filling out. Along with my AOS.

I am waiting to get my card with the number before I send the form so I can add the SSN on there.

My question is, although I don't need to check yes for them to issue me with a card, the card I have arriving will obviously be exempt from working. How does this get sorted? Do I need to check yes to get an updated card?

Thanks! :)

When you filled out the SSN application you ticked the box saying "legal alien allowed to work", so yes, your SSC will state that you are allowed to work - but only together with DHS authorization (the EAD).

K-1: 12-22-2015 - 09-07-2016

AP: 12-20-2016 - 04-07-2017

EAD: 01-18-2017 - 05-30-2017

AOS: 12-20-2016 - 07-26-2017

ROC: 04-22-2019 - 04-22-2020
Naturalization: 05-01-2020 - 03-16-2021

U.S. passport: 03-30-2021 - 05-08-2021

For the I-765 form Part 2 #14 select "No." If you want to remove "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION" from the SS card you have to wait until you are a permanent resident. At that time you need to go in-person to the SSA office to remove it.

I didn't even think about needing them both. Thank you so much!

It makes sense now you say that. Thank you for your help!
