Spouse Background Check

My wife has been in the U.S. for nearly three decades, and twenty years before we met. She has all of of her stuff together and is a legal permanent resident. I really have nothing to do with her immigration status, as it has been the same for many years before I came into the picture.

 

She has recently begun the process of becoming a citizen.

 

Will I be subject to a background check? Is there anything I could have done that could disqualify her from gaining citizenship? Would the results of such a check on me be divulged to her?

They will do a background check of your wife. That may or may not involve anything with you (the checks are a black box), but I doubt they would care about anything unless it was something that could be a concern for her (like - as a purely hypothetical - if you were a terrorist then it could raise questions about her). Barring something extreme like that, I wouldn't worry about any of your circumstances impacting her process.

 

The report results are not provided to the applicant. Since she has a green card already and renewed it multiple times, she's gone through these types of checks several times already. Unless there is some new inadmissibility, I wouldn't worry about it. She still needs to meet all the other requirements for naturalization, which can involve going back to how she got her green card and such, though.
