Kentucky Driver's Licence/State ID

Me and my fiancee got married last Saturday (Oct 20th), I arrived in the US on a K1 on Sep 4th and we're just about to send off my AOS and EAD papers to get that going. I was looking at getting a state id just so I have one. I've also been under the impression I can use my UK driver's licence for up a year after arriving. I did look to getting an Kentucky Driver's Licence, but was advised against until I got my green card just to save money.

Basically I thought after getting social security card and getting married I should be able to apply to get one, but when I went to the clerk's office I was told I couldn't until I have my green card. Somewhat conflicting information. Has anyone else moved to Kentucky, tell me their experience and what they had to do to get set up here after their K1?
