Hi All,

I put in my taxes a little late (doesn't really matter the Canadian gov owes me) to be done by my accountant back home.. My accountant really dropped the ball on me and eventually came back at me last week and said I need a cross border tax preparation specialist. Anyone have any suggestions of a good cross border tax prep firm? I've come across https://serbinski.com/ but I don't know if they are actually any decent and they look quite expensive.

Thanks,

Leo

Wait are you done your USA taxes? I just did my Canadian taxes late as well, but Canada is not complicated. The USA side is complicated indeed.

You can ask for more time from the IRS, but you need to file a notice of extention, form 2350.

I've done my US taxes already. Basically the problem is that I made Canadian income from January 2017-March 2017 (moved to US with K1 March 31 2017) and US Income from September 2017-December 2017. It's the whole was I out of the country long enough to be classified as a non resident so the Canadian government doesn't get to tax my US income. Also I got married in 2017 so I have to state that on my taxes as well but I don't want her to be a dependent since she's never lived in Canada.

Yup you just need to see if you qualify for a T1 for the whole of 2017, or just 9 months. Very likely you will be T1 for the whole year and in that case do not need to worry about saying if your wife is dependant or not. But I think it could depend how much total 2017 income was made outside of Canada.

Ya this is the tough part 60% of my income was made outside of Canada. Any suggestions on a cross border tax agent.
