Is travelling to Indonesia as my second country (where I got refugee status from) prohibited?

Hi,

 

I am a green card holder obtained direct from refugee. I am a citizen of Afghanistan. I fled to Indonesia and I got a refugee status from UNHCR there. By UNHCR, I came to USA as refugee. In this time I want to travel to Indonesia for visiting my wife in a couple of weeks. I want to know if I travel to Indonesia, would it be a risk for my status as a green card holder in USA after I come back from Indonesia? Is that prohibited and can be deemed abandon my status as a green card holder?

Providing that you have a valid Green Card, you will not have any problems to visit Indonesia or any other countries. Abandoning your PR or Green Card if you stay away from the US for more than a year without Re-Entry Permit.

 

If you're planning to stay more than a year outside the US, then you need to file Reentry Permit on Form I-131.

it depends. If you ended up in the US and subsequently became an LPR because of persecution in Indonesia, then like many would do, you would want to avoid traveling to the country that you escaped from. However, it appears like your 'country of persecution' was Afghanistan, so, that is the country you would want not to travel to. So, Indonesia should be fine.

 

HOWEVER...

 

... it might be advisable to apply for a Refugee Travel Document (RTD) because you got your LPR as an asylee or a refugee. What passport are you using? Afghani? If so, strongly advice a RTD which would make your travel much easier.

As a green card holder, you're welcome to come and go from the US as you like. As dandk said, you shouldn't stay out that long though. 

 

And assuming you have an Afghanistan passport, you'll have to get a visa to visit Indonesia.

yes that's right I escaped to Indonesia from Afghanistan and I will not travel to my home country. I don't have passport right now and yes I would apply RTD as a subtitute of my passport. Btw thank you for your informations.
