Question about getting a passport abroad

Hello, my husband's oath ceremony is coming up soon and we're thinking ahead to the passport. He may travel to the UK for an extended time after receiving his naturalization certificate and I know you can apply for a US passport at a US consulate abroad. The process seems pretty straightforward and we're thinking that might work well. We know you're only meant to enter the US with a US passport and that's fine. But is there any issue with him leaving the US, traveling out with his UK passport as his ID at the airport, not a US one?

I beleive the regulations state that a USC must exit and enter the US using their US passport.

Dual nationality

U.S. nationals, including dual nationals, must use a U.S. passport to enter and leave the United States. Dual nationals may also be required by the foreign country to use its passport to enter and leave that country. Use of the foreign passport to travel to or from a country other than the United States is not inconsistent with U.S. law.

Why can’t he get an expedited passport after the oath? All he needs is proof of travel, completed forms and pictures- bring his naturalization certificate and they accept credit cards.

Thank you @Dee elle! Definitely glad we found that out before he left. 

 

@milimelo We'll probably end up doing that now that it's clear you need the passport for leaving the country too. I thought maybe it was just entering and we could get away without having the pay the extra expedition fee.
