He's going to have to negotiate payment terms with whoever holds the loan. Remember that the exchange rate isn't favorable to people being paid in US dollars! If he has a chunk of cash he may want to put as much of that as possible towards paying off the loans since once he's overseas and paying them from the USA, he'll be smacked by exchange rate fluctuations and charges from banks to arrange payments in sterling.

Good luck!

I was under the assumption though that the poor exchange rate would work in our favour. You dont start paying back your SL until you're earning £15,000....that equates to over $30,000. 2 years ago that would have been $24,750. Therefore by earning a decent wage in comparison to standard of living in the US, you will end up paying a significantly lower percentage towards your student loan thanks to the weak dollar. I have friends in the UK who have told their bosses NOT to give them a pay rise as the rise in the amount they would then have to pay back to SLC increases to such an extent that their take home pay would be reduced despite the rise in pay.

As student loans are automatically taken from our pay here in the UK....it is up to you to arrange repaying that loan once you leave the country.

Hey all, same boat for me too!

I followed the link and it explains that the threshold is different according to which country you move to - for the US it's £12,000 so about $24,000 at the moment. My question is, as we're not able to work straight away will they count your partners' income into that amount or is it solely our income they base it on?

I contacted the my loan people back in August and explained my situation. They agreed to let me use my savings and just clear it (thankfully I had enough as I'd been saving to get on property ladder here) as I think it's just as much hassel for them if you need to pay them from overseas.

I've been wondering about this, too. Thankfully I appear to be on an older loan with different conditions. At last check, I had to be grossing £24k (£2000 monthly before tax, basically) before I needed to pay the loan back. Can I assume then that the terms will more or less transfer to my needing to earn about $48k ish or am I best discussing the specifics with the SLC themselves?

It is best to call and confirm, but my fairly confident guess is that you are correct in your assumption. Bascially, shortly before leaving, you should call SLC and inform them about your move and they will explain how to keep in touch and arrange for payments when the time comes. We're going to be making the call in January! :)

UK Student loans repayment is based solely on the persons income that has the loan.

We have had nothing but Headaches from the Student loans people.

Make sure you get everything in writing from them, even then they told us that they do not do anything in writing until we presented them with a letter on their letterhead.
