Hey everyone -

I just anted to post my medical exam story in case anyone is interested.

I scheduled it at Medysis in Toronto - my appt was at 1:30pm and the place is at St.Clair & Avenue Road in Toronto. I drove there because the recptionist who booked my appt said there was parking - so I ended up getting there early - paying $15 for parking and was in the office around 12:45p. I was told to fill out a form and return it to the front desk. I walked back into the waiting room to sadly see a ton of people...so much for being early.

I filled out the form and returned it to the front desk...I was told to go wait. So wait I did....and waited....and waited. At about 1:30p I was called in to an office to provide my passport, photos, and vaccination records. That took about 4 minutes...than go back and wait...wait...wait...

Around 2:30p I was called in for an eye test (very unofficial - stand behind a piece of tape in the hallway and read the chart), than in for blood work (combined time I'd say about 7 minutes) than go back and wait....wait....wait...

Around 3:30pm I was called in for my medical check by the doctor - I was put into a exam room and told to strip to my boxers and was told their were two people ahead of me so it shouldn't take long. I stripped down and sat there freezing for about 50 minutes (as I waited I heard about 7 other people get checked - the walls don't off much privacy sound wise). Finally the doc came in put the light in my eyes, ears, throat, did a blood pressure, and checked my heartbeat in a few places and I was done. The entire time with the doc...hmmm I'd say about 6 minutes. So i get dressed and figure it's time to go back to the waiting room but nope - I'm done here....more about this in a second

So I got there at 12:45pm and let at 4:30pm....3 hours 45 minutes - of that 17 minutes was actually getting something done - the other 3 hours and 28 minutes were sitting waiting...

So I get to the front desk and pay ($190 CAD) and than they tell me I have to go to a different building for my X-rays. The other building is at Yonge & Davisville so I had to get in my car, drive over there, find parking (another $10) and go for my x-rays.

As I get up to the counter the girl tells me the wait is at least 30-60 minutes. I didn't have a choice, suck it up. So I waited...and waited..and waited some more... at about 5:25pm I was called in - the had no more gowns to wear so I had to wear my undershirt to get the x-rays done - I have no idea what the women had to do....I got in the x-ray took about 30 seconds and I was free to go.

So overall my day consisted of paying $190 for a medical that was 1/1000th as thourough as my own physician has done 3 months ago for free, paid $25 for parking and spent about 4 and a half hours waiting for less than 20 minutes of actual medical work to be done.

All the staff were friendly, the doctor was a nice guy, no complaints about the people....but man the scheduling was awful. When I booked thre appt the girl told me it would be about an hour and a half....so much for that estimate. The whole thing reminded me of the Seinfeld episode where he goes to rent and car and had made a reservation but they didn't have any cars for him...."you know how to make the reservation....you just don't know how to keep the reservation"...why book at 1:30p appt when there is no chance of keeping that appt and staying on schedule. I am not a patient person unfortunately and this experience didn't help. By the time I was done with it all I wanted to go home have a cold beer and take a nap...I was beat.

I went back in 2 days and picked up my x-rays and report (all sealed up and confidential!) I asked the girl if there were any problems but she said "no news is good news" and that if there were any problems at all I would have heard from them before I could pick up my report so I was all clear!!

woo hoo, another thing checked off the list!

So thats my story it really wasn't that bad, just a ton of waiting, maybe I caught them on a bad day and they were crazy overbooked, or maybe it's always like that who knows. I just chose this place from the list of 'acceptable panel physicians' because it was close to my house and I wouldn't have to go all they way downtown to Dr.Seidens.

Hope I didn't bore you all to sleep

Darryl

Sounds pretty much like my own and my daughter's medical exams in Vancouver. I don't know why they don't schedule a certain amount of people for early in the day, then some more for mid-day, and the rest for the afternoon, instead of making everyone wait all day long.

Oh well, you're done with that part now. Good luck for a speedy rest of the process.
