Applying for citizenship - how about children?

Hello everybody.

 

A little background on me. I married an american citizen on 2011, he filed I-130 for me and my two children, we were approved and moved here on June 2012. I already had the children before we got married, so the children are his stepchildren.

Now after 5 years, and now that I have some extra money to put towards this, I have applied for citizenship under the 5 years rule. I have listed my children in the N-400 and I know they will become citizens if I am approved (boy is 14 and girl is 11 yo). Now the question is: when I receive my certificate of naturalization, do they automatically receive one too? Or is there a separate petition I have to file (N-600?) so they can receive their certificate of naturalization too? They moved here with me and have been living here with me for the entire time.

They will not be getting their own certificate.

You can apply for the N600 if you want or use your certificate to get them a US Passports. I just did the passports a lot less expensive.

Yes, passport seems the best way. Here’s the list of documents... you won’t need all of them, but that’s how you prove they are “derivative citizens” for the passport application:

U.S. Citizenship through Naturalization of a Parent

 

If you were born outside the United States and acquired U.S. citizenship through the naturalization of your parent(s), please submit the following with your passport application:

• Your foreign birth certificate listing your parent(s)
• Your parent(s)’ naturalization certificate
• Evidence of your permanent residence status. Examples include:
  • Permanent Resident Card/Green Card
  • Foreign passport with the original I-551 visa entry stamp
• Your parents' marriage certificate (if your parents were married when you legally entered the U.S. and before your 18th birthday) 
• Documentation of legal custody (if your parents were not married when you legally entered the U.S.)
• Evidence of your legitimation (if your parents were notmarried at the time of your birth). Examples include:
  • Your parents' marriage certificate dated after your birth
  • Certified court order of legitimation

I definitely wouldn't mind applying for the N-600, but for $1,170 for each, I cannot afford that right now...big thanks for the passport tip!!!

Yes, the passport is good but there is a problem if you don't have proof of legal custody document. If you separated with your previous husband you have to submit your divorce decree if it mentioned whom bears the legal custody. If you not married or you don't have mentioned in divorce decree then you must get a legal custody document.

This happened to so many of us, you can see in same forum where it said applying passport etc. I submitted for passport to my son who is 16 then they sent me a letter to send a legal custody document, I called them and also the agent who holds the file called me and he explained to send me divorce decree where it should have me the legal custody, and original GC.

I send them but since 10 days not yet updates.
