Hi! My husband has his interview in London on Monday. Months and months ago as he was gathering his civil documents, it occurred to him that his passport does not have his middle names on it. He has two middle names. Both middle names are on his birth certificate, but his passport only has his first and last name. There was no legal reason for this change, and he is not sure why his middle names would not be on his passport. We called about this because we weren’t sure which names to use when filling out paperwork, and we were told that the name on the birth certificate doesn’t matter and to match all documents to  the name on his passport. So for all documents, we omitted his middle names so that it would match his passport.  Now that his interview is nearing, he has been scanning the embassy website and he noticed an area that stated:

“It is your responsibility to document or correct any biographic discrepancies such as your name in your passport or birth certificate. All corrections must be made before your immigrant visa interview.  Failure to do this may prevent us from processing your application for an immigrant visa to a conclusion at the time of your appointment.”

This now has us worried that this discrepancy will delay or deny his visa. We’re not exactly sure what to do or how to fix it by Monday. Any advice?

You probably can't fix it.  Frankly though, I think they are referring to things like spelling or actual name changes.  For example, no married woman whose name changed at marriage would have a birth certificate that matches her passport.  She documents that name change.  If her maiden name is not on her divorce decree, she provides the marriage certificate (prior marriages) in order to track the name change.  I'm pretty sure that if the first given name and family name match, you're going to be just fine.  Please let us know.

A Warning to Green Card Holders About Voting

EDIT: My husband just informed me that his birth certifate states his first name and middle name all as his first name, and his second middle name and last name all as his last name.

For example:

First name: John David

Last Name: Andrew Smith

Instead of:

First name: John

Middle Name(s): David Andrew

Last Name: Smith

But for his whole life, and on his passport, he’s always just been called “John Smith”.

Passports usually say "Given Names" and "Surnames".  You correct this by getting the passport changed.  This should have been a red flag dealt with early in the process, before filing.  I realize you attempted to do so and were given bad advice by whomever you asked.  Nevertheless, I don't think it will be a problem, ultimately.  I could very well be wrong on this one.
