Traveling abroad with 3months left in extension letter expiry

Hi everyone;

        Seems like most of the April 2017 filers are on the same boat with their Removal of conditions application pending. 

 

I am traveling in the end of January outside the US and my 1year extension letter is still good until April 2018. Based on VJers experience will i be ok or do i need to get 551 stamped on my passport before i exit the country?

You can also schedule an appointment at your local USCUS office and the can put some sort 

of travel stamp

 

In any case BRING YOUR ORIGINAL NOA

You should double check on this as your circumstances may differ.

here is the what you can do about obtaining the "STAMP"

 

When your Extension letter is almost expired, you should make an InfoPass appointment (online at your local USCIS office) and get your passport stamped with I-551. Green card can be kept by USCIS in exchange for a stamp, so you should make a copy of the card before you go to get a stamp.

 

St Louis is wide open for appointments!!

Cool. Doing some more research they stamp passports with I-551 if the extension letter expiry is less than a month away (with some exceptions). I think for my this trip in Jan i'll be fine with what i have now and will plan for stamping passport if i was planning on going outside the country near to the April timeframe. 

 

BTW i checked my local field office (Sacramento) it doesn't have any appointment available in next two weeks and won't display any appointments beyond 2 weeks time. x-fingers.

It is not about when you leave it is all about when you are coming back.  When are you returning?

As long as you return before the extension letter expires you are good to go

Additionally, I read that local field office may take the ORIGINAL (expired) Green Card if they place stamp in passport.  So I'd keep away from the 1-551 stamp option if your are with in 11 months of the NOA extension expiry date.
