Hello,

I (American citizen) want to apply for a K-1 Visa for my girlfriend (UK citizen). The complication is that we would like to spend the next year or so traveling South America while we wait for the visa paperwork to be processed. Neither of us will have a physical address during this time. Is it still possible to get the ball rolling on the I-129?

Has anyone tried applying for a K-1 visa while traveling long term?

Thanks

You’re gonna need physical addresses even if it’s parents’ addresses. Just have some bills rerouted that way. The US citizen is also gonna need a job in the US to prove you can financially support yourselves after the immigrant comes.

We got a lawyer to be our proxy as we lived abroad. It was expensive and he hasn't really helped with much else, but it meant we could just send him our docs, sign what we needed to, and know that everything will be safe being mailed to him. Alternatively you could use your parents address and just make sure they understand how important all notifications that come through are.

Also TNJ17 is right, you will need to be able to prove you can support your fiance once you get to the US. When she has her interview in London they're not so strict about needing tax returns etc, but you will need yo have payslips, bank statements etc. I haven't had my interview yet, but because we have both been living abroad for the last year (just moved home, him to US, me to UK) we will be providing a copy of our savings account, plus his Dad will be signing an affidavit of support for me. So if you could get someone to do that for you then you'll be fine.

Excellent. That is reassuring. I called my mom last night and she doesn't mind signing the affidavit of support for my fiance. I should have adequate savings but I'd like to remove all chance for failure. Both our parents have been acting as our mailing address for sometime so we will just tell them to pay special attention to possible visa related papers.
