Not really, there is no proof that there was any hacking by Russians.  I heard that here a bazillion times.

There is a difference between hacking and collusion with the hackers.

Wish he would have explained what he wanted Obama to do given no hacking of the election took place. :pop:

Yes, that would have been nice to know.

I am sure.  But I was told on this site what hand wringing hysterical nut cases folks who believed that the Russians were hacking  the DNC or election offices were.  What has changed?

Nothing has changed.  The phishing of the DNC occurred, probably the Russians, but I imagine other intelligence agencies could do it and make it look like the Russians.  However, all the hand wringing is about the possible collusion of the Trump campaign with this attack.  It seems we already know we need to shore up our election systems and the parties need to pay attention to the security, beyond that, what are we going to do.

I wouldn't even go that far to assume Russians were involved.. and clarity needs to also be on what "Russians" means. Is it the Kremlin under Putin's command? Is it average Russian hacker/script kiddo? Is it someone using proxies/VPN/zombie machines as is common to do?

Given how terribly the "intelligence community" has been at intelligence in the past, I'm skeptical of anything they say, so I'd like to see proof in the form of IP logs that point to real machines and people rather than proxy or botnet. Assange has proven more reliable than the intelligence community and he says it's not "Russians" (whatever that means).. that's all we have thus far, and a lot of lefties grasping at any straw for their prior pre-conceived conspiracies to hold up as true (using their horrible standards of proof for extraordinary claims).

No proof that the DNC hack was phishing, most likely not.   Unclear on the Podesta emails. There was proof published that the local  Election Offices were a victim a sophisticated pishing scheme that included a look like google service that sent you  a text message for you to authenticate that the phishing was legit.

you have a hard time admitting you dont have a clue about IT security

- Considers phishing a hack

- Others have a hard time admitting they don't have a clue about IT security

Wasn't there some kid that hacked Sarah Palin's email account back in 2008?

The DNC was not hacked by spearphishing.

The DNC was phished. You are wrong -- again.

Also, relevant for alleged IT experts:

http://wikidiff.com/phishing/hacking

In computing terms the difference between hacking and phishing is that hacking is (computing) unauthorized attempts to bypass the security mechanisms of an information system or network while phishing is (computing) the act of sending email that falsely claims to be from a legitimate organization this is usually combined with a threat or request for information: for example, that an account will close, a balance is due, or information is missing from an account the email will ask the recipient to supply confidential information, such as bank account details, pins or passwords; these details are then used by the owners of the website to conduct fraud.

Hacking = brute forcing into a system, Phishing is using the stupidity/gullibility of others via email to click a link and provide personal information where they shouldn't. Very distinct difference.

And numerous people in the DNC fell for phishing scams.

I doubt they hacked Yahoo, so I'm guessing they hacked Palin's account (this is an actual hack, though not with the sophistication that actual hacking comes from) by the same method used in the Fappening leaks, with either 1) obvious passwords, or 2) easy to solve security/recovery questions.

In many ways it's exploitative similar to a hack.. most things I'd call a hack surrounds server side vulnerabilities in software. In the case of phishing, or people losing their accounts, it stems from the stupidity of the end user rather than a security flaw in the server.

Edit:

I also have to point out that working in the MMO video game industry the word "hack" has become an extremely broad term by laymen.

For example, an overly common issue I dealt with:

- PlayerA shares their account and equipment with PlayerB, giving them their login and password info

- PlayerB gets mad at PlayerA or is a jerk and decides to trash PlayerA's gear

- PlayerA loses all their stuff, gets mad, whines to CS, PlayerA says they were "hacked"

- I tell them they were not hacked, they shared their account, and were screwed over from their own stupidity

I consider having easy passwords (i.e. Podesta's password of "p@ssword") or easy security/recovery questions (i.e. Fappening victims likely using easy as hell questions to guess like "Favorite Food", "City born", etc.) just as bad as the cited gaming example above.
