Very Fake News: After Breitbart Investigation, CNN Retracts Conspiracy Theory Hit Piece Attacking Trump, Associates Over Russian Fund

CNN has admitted it printed what President Donald Trump calls “very fake news” and retracted a demonstrably inaccurate hit piece on the President and his allies after a Breitbart News investigation uncovered significant inaccuracies and flaws in CNN’s work.

“On June 22, 2017, CNN.com published a story connecting Anthony Scaramucci with investigations into the Russian Direct Investment Fund,” CNN said in a statement late Friday night. “That story did not meet CNN’s editorial standards and has been retracted. Links to the story have been disabled. CNN apologizes to Mr. Scaramucci.”

The statement was sent out very late Friday evening on CNN’s Twitter account.

The retraction is a complete cave by a network that is notorious for trying to pick fights with President Trump and his allies. President Trump has identified CNN as a “very fake news” network. It comes on the heels of Breitbart News reporting on the inaccurate CNN hit piece, citing senior administration officials and sources close to Senate GOP leadership.

The thrust of CNN’s inaccurate piece, which is no longer available online, was a demonstrably untrue allegation that the Senate Intelligence Committee and Treasury Department were probing a Russian investment fund with ties to senior Trump allies like Anthony Scaramucci.

Using a single anonymous source, CNN wrote:

The source said the Senate intelligence committee is investigating the Russian fund in connection with its examination of discussions between White House adviser Jared Kushner and the head of a prominent Russian bank. The bank, Vnesheconombank, or VEB, oversees the fund, which has ties to several Trump advisers. Both the bank and the fund have been covered since 2014 by sanctions restricting U.S. business dealings.

According to the lefties as BuzzFeed, CNN’s president Jeff Zucker himself is now personally involved in trying to handle the cover-up:

More: CNN President Zucker and head of HR are "directly involved" in investigation into how the story was handled https://t.co/C49EJq7Iev

— Jon Passantino (@passantino) June 25, 2017

The network made Brian Stelter, the ever-reliable defender of very fake news and host of Reliable Sources, go Tweet about in shame:

A retraction by CNN — "this story did not meet CNN's editorial standards" https://t.co/YMbwZzwrz3

— Brian Stelter (@brianstelter) June 24, 2017

But even Stelter was admitting by later in the evening he was pushing more fake news as CNN’s woes grow bigger:

Fair point. I should have said "46% of voters in the election voted for Trump" https://t.co/YVjtrJ0xoE

— Brian Stelter (@brianstelter) June 25, 2017

And Stelter is facing mounting criticism for his refusal to report on the scandal engulfing CNN:

Hey Brian. Are you going to discuss CNN's embarrassing retraction of a poorly sourced Russia conspiracy theory story? Asking for a friend. https://t.co/PQbthyV6pe

— Arthur Schwartz (@ArthurSchwartz) June 24, 2017

It’s unclear at this time if anyone, especially the reporter responsible for printing the very fake news that Breitbart News exposed as false, forcing CNN’s retraction, has been held accountable for his mistakes though. But the reporter, Thomas Frank, Tweeted out the editor’s apology and retraction notice:

For the sake of transparency, I am posting an editor's note from CNN concerning a story I posted on Thursday — https://t.co/xdCGW1Ib65

— Tom Frank (@ByTomFrank) June 24, 2017

CNN remains under fire — but here is the original text of the very fake news article:

Breitbart called this report “very fake news.” Now story appears to have been removed from CNN website. Cache copy: https://t.co/im21E0JX6ypic.twitter.com/diCpKvNdR9

mfw Breitbart is more reliable news than CNN.

Now lets think back over the months of all the lefties who've supported anonymously sourced garbage fake news? Hl9rl26.gif #UnhingedLeft

Report: CNN Imposing New Rules On Russia Coverage After Another Botched Story

Higher-ups at CNN are cracking down after another botched story regarding President Trump and Russia.

The network retracted and deleted a story late last week that claimed Anthony Scaramucci, who served on Trump’s transition team, was under FBI investigation for a meeting he had with a Russian executive. That story, which was based off of one unnamed congressional source, was false. (RELATED: CNN Retracts Story About Trump Adviser Being Under Investigation For Russia Ties)

“No one should publish any content involving Russia without coming to me and Jason,” CNNMoney executive editor Rich Barbieri said in an email obtained by BuzzFeed. “This applies to social, video, editorial, and MoneyStream. No exceptions.” The “Jason” referred to in the email is a vice president at CNN, according to BuzzFeed.

Very Fake News Scandal Consumes CNN as Jeff Zucker, Network Flack Refuse to Comment on Russia Retraction to Own Network

The scandal surrounding CNN’s mishandling of a very fake news hit piece on President Donald Trump and his associates grows bigger on Sunday night as the network’s president Jeff Zucker and public relations team is refusing to comment to anyone — even to CNN media reporter Brian Stelter — about what happened.

Stelter, in his Sunday evening newsletter named for the television program he hosts Reliable Sources, credited a Breitbart News investigation with forcing what he admitted is an embarrassing retraction for his employer CNN.

“On Friday evening CNN.com fully retracted a story after questions were raised about the accuracy of the reporting and sourcing,”

But then, after calling this episode “an embarrassing moment for CNN,” Stelter dropped a neutron bomb on his own employer: He revealed that CNN is refusing to comment on or explain the matter, even to CNN.

“The truth is, there’s still a lot we don’t know,” Stelter wrote. “On Saturday and Sunday I asked CNN PR for details and comment. A network spokeswoman declined to comment as of Sunday evening.”

Stelter called for a full accounting of what went wrong so CNN can learn from its significant mistakes.

“I sometimes complain to my editors about the layers of editing and oversight that exist at CNN,” Stelter wrote. “But these processes exist for good reasons. Determining what went wrong this time will help prevent future damage to the news organization…”

Losing Stelter as a public defender, for now, is a huge moral loss for the network as this scandal grows bigger and casts a wider net internally. His voice joins others, like Breitbart News and BuzzFeed News, in calling for CNN’s public relations team to answer questions about the matter. As more in the media become aware of the scandal and get involved in covering it as well, especially now that the weekend is over and it’s not getting any better, insiders at CNN worry that this is spiraling out of control quickly.[/quiote]
