My husband and I were watching this last night. Pretty horrific. Some people were never rescued, others were forced to abandon the elderly, and others were tossing their children from the windows. Escaped residents were told by police to phone their family members trapped inside the building and 'guide them out'???!!!

 

Concerned citizens had been warning about this tower block being a potential death trap for years to the council and landlord who would do nothing. I found the response to this fire kind of futile and pitiful, but it seems this area also suffered from Tory cuts to police and fireman units including a critical rescue unit that may have made some difference, in addition to scrapping requirements for a proper sprinkler system and fire hazard protection. The building was also recently retrofitted with external products which have been known to be highly combustible and resulted in similar fires.. instead of installing fire safety systems...

The cause has not been determined but one resident said a fridge had exploded.

My initial assessment was that it was terrorist related but that doesn't seem to be it. Truly sad
