Hi, when I fill my documents here in Serbia as the country of birth i always put Yugoslavia because that's what my country was called when i was born but Its just called Serbia now and I really don't know what to put in the little space for it, should I use Yugoslavia (but that country doesn't exist anymore) or Serbia (but I wasn't really born in Serbia) or should we do Serbia (Yugoslavia)?
Filling out these papers is a nightmare!

THANK YOU

You can always go with the country where you originally were born (Yugoslavia), and explain in your cover letter that Yugoslavia doesn't exist anymore, and it's now called Serbia.   I know two people that were born in the USSR, they used USSR as their country of birth on USCIS forms, and they had no problems.

What does your passport say?

Hi SvemirZeka, my husband has a similar situation.  He was born in the USSR, now Russian Federation.  On documents that ask for country of birth we write USSR.  That is technically where and when he was born.  We never, and have not had any issues with it as of this far.  However, I'm sure you could write either Yugoslavia or Serbia, and it would still be ok regardless.  In our situation we just happen to write it that way because that is what the name of his country was when he was born, so really it makes sense.  You would not be lying or contradicting anything or anyone by writing the country of birth for what is was during that time period when you were born.  As for other questions regarding where you currently live and under current circumstances regarding your country, I would write Serbia.
