Hello, I am new to the forum and I am starting the process to bring my Japanese fiancé to the usa.

I was lookingat the process and the cover letter and noticed that I am to send a copy of my birth certificate and a copy of my passport. . I do not have one yet. My fiancé visited me first in America.

My question is am I required to have a passport to start the process?

I'm sorry it's probably a stupid question but it has me slightly concerned because I want to start the process asap.

Thank you in advanced :)

Im pretty sure you only need one if you are a US citizen. (either the Birth cert or the Passport).  I only sent copies of all my US passport pages in and not a birth cert.

My Husband didn't have a passport either. He sent a copy of his birth certificate.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

You need to provide a copy of your birth certificate OR your passport. See Part 5. "Documents Do You Need to Show That You Are a U.S. Citizen?" under " Requirements and Documents" in the I-129f instructions:

Passports is one of the proof of citizenship items you can use not have to use.

passport would be needed to prove possibly having had met if you needed to show proof but you say she came her.

so just provide your birth certificate and explain you met here.  Her passport can prove she came here.
