Can a K-1 visa awaiting AOS open a bank acct?

We were told by our credit union in Denver (2months ago) that she could not be on my account until the green card arrives. It is possible that this is no longer true but some banks are operating on outdated information.

Sorry this is only a half answer. The original rule was to help control the flow of terrorist funding, I believe.

If you have an SSN most banks will do this and without one some banks will :) I opened with Bank of America without problem even without SSN. 

They also added me as an authorized user on my husbands credit card and I opened a secured credit card in my name to build credit.

Money transferred in is still checked... I transfered all my savings in and it took a few days for them to clear the paper trail. I'm unsure about cash deposits but usually large deposits need to be verified as well.

You can. I added my then fiance (now husband) to my bank account within the first month of him being here before we got married. Originally we were going to do a W8-BEN but then we just waited til he had his SSN. Some banks are more stingy than others, and you'll have to be lucky to have someone that knows what they were doing.
