Trump:I will quit business "in Total" for presidency

In yet another early-morning tweetstorm, President-elect Donald Trump has announced he will leave his businesses in total in order to fully focus on running the country. He announced the news in four separate tweets. Trump and his family will discuss the move on Dec. 15 in New York City at a major news conference. Trump says he is not mandated to but wants to quit the businesses to avoid the appearance of conflicting interests. I feel it is visually important, as president, to in no way have a conflict of interest with my various businesses, he wrote. Much has been made in recent weeks of the overlap between his meetings with world leaders and his ability to obtain permits and contracts for his buildings in those countries.

I find it funny how much twitter is used for big announcements these days. At this point they should just get rid of the character limit. Lots of people tweet long messages like this over 4, 5 or more tweets. It just makes it look really silly. We need another platform that allows for longer messages, or twitter just needs to drop the limit.

I'm glad he is being transparant about this and hope he follows through with the plan. I still think having his children run the business will present some potential conflicts of interest if he continues to involve them in his life as much as he does now (have them sit in on meetings). However, far less than if he were running things himself. Good move in the right direction.

This is weird as hell. Between 12:55 and 12:57 pm on the East Coast this afternoon, the Office of Government Ethics sent out a tweetstorm addressed to Donald Trump:

We can't repeat enough how good this total divestiture will be....Brilliant! Divestiture is good for you, very good for America!....OGE applauds the "total" divestiture decision. Bravo!....As we discussed with your counsel, divestiture is the way to resolve these conflicts....OGE is delighted that you've decided to divest your businesses. Right decision!....Bravo! Only way to resolve these conflicts of interest is to divest . Good call!....this aligns with OGE opinion that POTUS should act as if 18 USC 208 applies. http://bit.ly/2fRpIG0....this divestiture does what handing over control could never have done....we told your counsel we'd sing your praises if you divested, we meant it.

Needless to say, Trump has made no decision to divest his holdings. He has said only that he plans to hand over control of "business operations" to his kids.

So what happened? Here's a few theories:

Trump really does plan to divest, and his lawyers have told OGE this. Then OGE screwed up and scheduled a tweetstorm about it before Trump's announcement.

OGE did this "accidentally" in order to put pressure on Trump to divest.

OGE did this deliberately in order to put pressure on Trump to divest.

Something else.
