An additional note... When it comes to questions about transits/transfers and whether you'll have to re-check your bags or not, the information you get from the airline customer service people before hand is absolutely worthless. United told me three different things about a transfer from a United flight to a Cathay flight in HK, and told me two different things about the PVG transfer. Cathay and Asiana were equally useless. Just be prepared by making yourself have no short transit layovers if changing airlines or transiting a country you've never passed through, and be willing to ask questions rather than assume.

As an aside... If you change airlines after the first hop in a multiple hop trip, sometime you will be asked to "virtually re-check" your luggage. You don't actually have to recheck it, but for example, when I go from Cebu to Incheon and transit from Asiana to United, United calls me to the desk just before boarding and verifies my luggage count and tags on my flight from Incheon to Narita. Oddly, if I take Asiana to Narita, United does not do this same check in Narita.

JEEZ! That's nuts! Thankfully I've changed my flight and I'm now going through Korea - Japan - USA. I've transferred through the Incheon Airport before so I know it's all easy breezy. Never flying through China. Not after all these horror stories about TWO HOUR delays via Shanghai Airlines and the ridiculousness of having to go through arrival AND departure immigration.
